The Wyandotte breeder has a dual purpose, meat and eggs, besides having docility and rusticity characteristics, favoring its breeding in small and large scales. In this study, the influence of egg storage time on incubation performance and criteria for determining the sex of post-hatch birds were evaluated. Three egg storage periods were adopted: short (0-2 days), intermediate (3-5 days) and long (6-8 days). The total weight loss between storage and incubation was higher for eggs that were stored longer (6-8 days) compared to the other evaluated times. The hatchability rate was better for the eggs that had been stored for less time. The embryonic mortality of eggs with longer storage time (6-8 days), showed a higher number of eggs with early mortality and stillborn. At hatching, it was possible to differentiate the chicks by the abdominal plumage coloration, with the males characterized by yellow coloration from the crop to the cloaca region. The yellow coloration was observed in the female only in the cloacal region. The prolonged storage time negatively affects weight loss of eggs from the Wyandotte breeders, as well as incubation parameters; and the post-hatch sexing can be performed by evaluating the plumage coloration of the chocks ventral area on hatch day.","PeriodicalId":8351,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Veterinary Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46084252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The species that parasitize domestic animals are the most studied due to their sanitary importance, but little is known about most of the tick species that parasitize wild animals. Therefore, the aim of this study is to report the ocurrence of tick’s parasitism of the genus Amblyomma infesting Vine-snake (Chironius bicarinatus), Bentinho’s Sloth (Bradypus tridactylus) and Puma (Puma concolor) in a zoo in the city of Manaus, Amazonas, northern Brazil. Larvae of the genus Amblyomma as well as specimens of A. ovale, A. varium and A. gaeyi were identified. Therefore, it is possible to say that these tick species are present in Manaus, Amazonas, as well as it is the first report of specimens of Amblyomma spp. parasitizing Chironius bicarinatus. The scarcity of reports of this nature highlights the need for further studies on the distribution of these arthropods in different regions and host species.","PeriodicalId":8351,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Veterinary Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41269223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oral administration of 0.75% H2O2 (exogenic oxidant as reactive oxygen species donar) in drinking water for eight weeks was used for oxidative stress induction. The recorded results showed that oxidative stress has caused significant (P< 0.05) alterations in the neurobehavior of experimental animals in comparison to the control. The animals manifested a significant decrease (P<0.05) in locomotor, and exploration (open field test), defect in vestibular functions (negative geotaxis test), degree of cognitive function, and neuromuscular coordination (rotarod test). Mild (non-significant) changes were recorded in autonomic nervous system activity (number of urination and defecation) in H2O2 treated group, and less or non-significant changes in the other groups. The daily administration of apigenin (150 mg/kg body weight) in glycosidic and aglycon forms protected neurons probably by reducing oxidative damage and attenuated significantly the neurobehavioral disorders and imposed its neuro-protective and sedative effects in comparison to butylated hydroxytoloune (25 mg/kg body weight) treated and control groups.","PeriodicalId":8351,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Veterinary Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43049777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Epidemiological studies of this fauna are important for prophylaxis and treatment of zoonotic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the parasitic fauna of Mugil curema for 2 years, from November 2015 to October 2017, in estuarine waters of the Northshore of Santa Catarina. A total of 282 specimens were captured with a gillnet in the Parati River, Araquari, SC, Brazil. The fish were necropsied, and its parasitic fauna studied. Tha parasite prevalence rate was 96.81% (273/282), being 97.30% (72/74) females, 94.55% (52/55) males and 97.39% (149/153) nonidentified gender. The prevalence of Neoechinorhynchus curemai was 43.97% (124/282), Ergasilus lizae 77.66% (219/282), Lernaeenicus longiventris 73.05% (206/282), Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa in the liver 24.04% (96/282) and in the muscle 36.88% (104/282), and Haloporidae was found in 26.13% (29/111). The Parati River has peculiar characteristics on its dynamics, which interferes in the parasitological rates of the fish living there, a relation that still needs better investigation.","PeriodicalId":8351,"journal":{"name":"Archives of Veterinary Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42444409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
