Although there are differences that can be drawn between developed and developing nations, these meanings appear to be differentiated by variables such as gender, race and ethnicity, living arrangements, and age cohort. However, the legitimacy or dominance accorded some of the meanings will likely be dependent upon the ideological beliefs of those who are deemed experts or who wield influence in policy circles. Meanwhile, the resolution of many of the most pressing aging policy issues will be compelled by the sheer demographics of aging and confounded by the extent to which ideological perspectives are intractable.","PeriodicalId":82727,"journal":{"name":"Social thought","volume":"20 1","pages":"1 - 16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15426432.2001.9960291","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59931936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, domestic violence practitioners and researchers often diminish the influence of spirituality in the lives of violent men and assume that violent men, regardless of their ethnicity, can be accurately understood using Eurocentric paradigms that de‐emphasize the importance of spirituality. This article reveals that the lack of attention that has been given to spirituality may be negating a significant resource for violent men, especially among African American men. It provides empirical data on the spiritual perspectives of African American and European American men. It also shows that the spiritual energies that promote a sense of wholeness have a significant influence on the level of physical violence used by violent men, regardless of their ethnic identity.","PeriodicalId":82727,"journal":{"name":"Social thought","volume":"8 1","pages":"107 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15426432.2001.9960283","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59931734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corría 1944 cuando delante de los estudiantes de la Acción Francesa preconizó a dos jóvenes como sus continuadores: Jean Ousset y Jean Arfel. El primero fundaba poco tiempo después la Ciudad Católica, que tanta tinta haría correr en la prensa francesa y que merced a Eugenio Vegas Latapie y Juan Vallet de Goytisolo tendría traslación, y duradera, a este lado de los Pirineos. Mientras el segundo, que pronto adoptaría el nom de plume de Jean Madiran, añadía a su quehacer de cronista político el de profesor en la escuela que dirigía André Charlier y se hallaba en el château de Maslacq. Por ahí había de entrar, junto a Maurras, una segunda referencia capital en su biografía intelectual: Charles Péguy, de quien André Charlier y su hermano Henri, escultor y escritor, ambos conversos, tenían parte en su espíritu. En esa doble herencia, y a beneficio de inventario, hecha propia sobre el lecho de la filosofía cristiana en su versión tomista, está in nuce toda la inspiración de la obra de Jean Madiran. En 1956 da vida a una revista, Itinéraires, llamada a constituirse en lugar geométrico de un catolicismo combativo, contra el comunismo, de acuerdo con la necesidad imperiosa de la época, pero no menos contra la fortuna anónima y vagabunda, o contra el clericalismo modernista que hacía presagiar los tiempos de hierro del posconcilio. The study was based on a national sample representative of the 39 million Americans age 60 and over. The data indicate that those who attended both church and club meetings had the lowest levels of physical dysfunction; those who attended one but not the other had intermediate levels of dysfunction, and those who did not attend church and also did not attend club meetings had the highest dysfunction levels. These findings suggest that physical limitations reduce participation in social activities at church and in clubs, which may limit access to social support for older persons that could benefit the most from it. Social workers should seek ways of identifying natural support systems when working with older adults to help provide social participation opportunities for older persons, especially those that may have access and mobility problems due to physical limitations.","PeriodicalId":82727,"journal":{"name":"Social thought","volume":"20 1","pages":"115 - 97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15426432.2001.9960297","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59932185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Analysis of on‐line discussion, autobiographical writings, and interviews of 16 people with CF identified spiritual beliefs, spiritual metaphors, transpersonal developmental patterns, and accounts of transpersonal experiences, such as miracles and contact with sacred beings. The principles of empowerment and phenomenologically oriented research for transpersonal topics shaped the methodology of this qualitative study. Implications for spiritually sensitive social work practice with people with chronic illnesses are presented.","PeriodicalId":82727,"journal":{"name":"Social thought","volume":"32 1","pages":"109 - 134"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15426432.2001.9960284","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59931742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay first examines the agist society and challenges its present mind‐set to dispel ageism and engage in intervention designed to enhance quality of living. It concludes with a brief discussion of meaning‐making and soul‐nourishment of the able‐old and frail‐old, affirming the value of spiritual development continuing throughout old age.","PeriodicalId":82727,"journal":{"name":"Social thought","volume":"20 1","pages":"129 - 140"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15426432.2001.9960299","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59932311","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Interdisciplinary and, more recently, social work conceptualizations of the whole person have added spirituality. After exploring definitions of spirituality, this article describes seven models which include diagrams that enhance the conceptual understanding of spirituality. The models are examined with regard to the spiritual growth process by drawing on developmental theories. A new diagrammatic model, Spirituality: A Wholistic Model, illustrates the relationship between spirituality and the biological, psychological, social, and transpersonal dimensions of the person. It provides a way to evaluate the helpfulness of experiences, including practice interventions, with respect to their role in assisting each individual in moving toward realization of full potential.","PeriodicalId":82727,"journal":{"name":"Social thought","volume":"20 1","pages":"21 - 5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15426432.2001.9960278","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59931536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It incorporates and links relevant knowledge from transpersonal psychology and deep ecological philosophy in an effort to formulate fresh avenues for defining, pursuing, and resolving the many challenges that humankind faces at the dawn of this new millenium.
