Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO<sub>2</sub> NPs) are widely used in industrial and consumer products, leading to their increasing discharge into aquatic systems. These particles interact with cyanobacteria (e.g., <i>Microcystis aeruginosa</i>) and macrophytes (e.g. <i>Lemna minor</i>). This study examined the interactive effects of UV-B radiation (0.8 W/m<sup>2</sup> and 2 W/m<sup>2</sup>) and TiO<sub>2</sub> NPs (48 mg/L) on the physiological responses and allelopathic interactions between <i>M. aeruginosa</i> and <i>L. minor</i>. Our findings showed that low UV-B exposure significantly reduced chlorophyll <i>a</i> and total protein levels in <i>M. aeruginosa</i>, accompanied by increased microcystin, hydrogen peroxide (H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels under UV-B exposure. High UV-B particularly upregulated peroxidase (POD) activity in <i>M. aeruginosa</i>. In <i>L. minor</i>, low UV-B enhanced chlorophyll <i>a</i>, whereas high and low UV-B and TiO<sub>2</sub> exposure suppressed pigment and growth. Co-culturing <i>M. aeruginosa</i> with <i>L. minor</i> under low UV-B and TiO<sub>2</sub> exposure further suppressed algal growth and reduced protein content. UV-B and TiO<sub>2</sub> increased oxidative damage, reduced algal biomass and toxin production, and potentially disrupted allelopathic interactions. Exposure of <i>L. minor</i> to <i>M. aeruginosa</i> and high UV-B increased H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> levels and POD activity. Our results show that allelopathic interactions between <i>L. minor</i> and <i>M. aeruginosa</i> are highly sensitive to UV-B radiation and are further increased when TiO<sub>2</sub> nanoparticles are present. In this context, we evaluated variations in the taxonomic and functional diversity of fish communities at five locations within the Gelado tailings dam, formed by a dammed stream in the Brazilian Amazon region. Among these locations, two are additionally affected by the continuous deposition of iron tailings. We sampled fish (collected using standardized gill nets) and environmental data in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2021. We used linear mixed-effects models (GLMM) and permutational analysis of variance to assess differences in alpha and beta diversity among the different locations, respectively. We used the longitudinal gradient and expedition years to control for potential spatial and temporal autocorrelation effects during the analyses. Our results revealed that species composition varied significantly only between areas with and without tailings, while taxonomic structure, functional structure, and functional composition showed no variations among the different locations. The longitudinal gradient was significant only for functional evenness. Differences in species composition were due to variations in the abundance and capture frequency of <i>Leporinus friderici,</i> primarily in the area with tailing. Consequently, effects related to tailings deposition, along with the longitudinal gradient, exert a greater influence on the spatial structure of communities than local environmental variations, such as the presence of specific microhabitats. We characterised assemblages on artificial structures at a commercial <i>Macrocystis pyrifera</i> farm in Shearwater Bay and on natural substrates within an adjacent kelp forest at Diaz Point, Lüderitz, Namibia. Three sampling campaigns were conducted during 2024. Individual-count and percentage-cover data were used for within-site substrate analyses, while presence-absence data were used for an exploratory description of broader assemblage patterns. Thirty taxa from eight phyla were recorded: 24 at Diaz Point and 19 at Shearwater Bay, with 13 taxa shared. Because the sites differed in sampling effort, substrate composition, kelp species, seabed type and hydrodynamic exposure, these observed totals and between-site patterns are descriptive rather than estimates of habitat effects. Within each site, assemblage structure varied among substrates and sampling campaigns, although abundance-based PERMANOVA results were partly associated with heterogeneous multivariate dispersion. Occurrence-based ordination showed partial separation with overlap; Shearwater Bay samples were more tightly clustered, whereas Diaz Point samples occupied a broader ordination space. Farm structures were frequently occupied by mussels and barnacles, while the natural-site taxon list included a wider range of sponges, anemones, bryozoans and polychaetes. The structuring of invertebrate assemblages depends on several factors, such as saline and depth gradients, vegetation coverage and substrate characteristics. Transition areas are an interconnected mosaic of habitats that are subject to daily and seasonal environmental changes. Identifying the factors that drive community structuring at large and small scale is crucial for habitat preservation. This study analysed the relationship between different contiguous assemblages in the Minho River estuary, focusing on the salinity gradient present in the intertidal and subtidal zones with soft substrates, and in algal and macrophyte beds, as well as their associated sediments. The distribution of most species was determined by salinity and depth gradients, sediment texture and organic matter content. The seasonal colonisation of areas upstream or downstream depended on salinity and temperature. Overall, the diversity and abundance of sediments associated with macrophytes is higher, which highlights the importance of these beds in estuarine productivity. Furthermore, the assemblages found in the <i>Fucus ceranoides</i> and <i>Egeria densa</i> leaves differed markedly from those found on the soft bottom. It was also discovered that, in oligohaline environments, regional drivers shape the invertebrate communities, in contrast to polyhaline and tidal freshwater environments which are mainly shaped by both regional and local factors. Population dynamics and temporal structure of gill monogeneans were studied on 390 individuals of <i>Enteromius guirali</i> caught in the Cesala River. From June 2020 to June 2021, 3671 <i>Dactylogyrus mendehei</i> and 4684 <i>Dactylogyrus nyongensis</i> were collected. Prevalence were low in June 2021 and high in August 2020 for <i>D. mendehei</i>; low in December and high in June 2020 for <i>D. nyongensis</i>. Mean intensities were lowest in June, October, November and December 2020; January and February 2021 for <i>D. mendehei</i>; November and December 2020 for <i>D. nyongensis</i>. <i>Dactylogyrus mendehei</i> parasitized the same number of hosts each season, whereas <i>D. nyongensis</i> parasitized few hosts during the long dry season. <i>Dactylogyrus mendehei</i> and <i>D. nyongensis</i> were more abundant on the gills of <i>E. guirali</i> during the long and short rainy seasons. <i>Dactylogyrus mendehei</i> was frequently distributed according to models III, II, I, IV (September 2020 and February 2021) and II, IV, III, I (December 2020 and January 2021) while <i>D. nyongensis</i> frequently occupied the gill arches according to model II, III, IV, I (September, November, December 2020 and February 2021). The patterns of exploitation of the transverse gradient by monogeneans changed over time. It was linked to the variation model of the colonisable gill surface area of this Teleost. An increase of temperature and a decrease of water level influenced the distribution of component community. The periodic abundance of this alga greatly affects water quality and sometimes leads to the loss of aquaculture. Spore reproduction may be one of the main reasons for its rapid growth. Adaptability to the environment also determines its rapid adaptation and expansion of territory. However, the invasion potential remains poorly understood. We investigated reproductive characteristics in different lengths of fragments excised from <i>C. valida</i>, the detailed process and environmental adaptation conditions of spore reproduction and the variation of the enzyme activity of cells during sporangium formation. Results: shorter fragments boosted spore reproduction (more sporangia, spore release) but reduced vegetative reproduction; algal cell oxidation favored sporangium formation. Salinity 20–30 psu best promoted sporangium formation/release (salinity 40 psu inhibited both); high nitrogen enhanced sporangium production. Low water flow promoted spore release, high flow inhibited it and reduced spore attachment. Suitable fragment lengths and environments enabled massive spore production and new individual development, so spore-producing fragments drive <i>C. valida</i>’s biomass accumulation. This study investigated the spatial distribution of microplastic contamination and the influence of hydrological and physicochemical factors on microplastic occurrence in the upstream reach of the Ambathale Water Treatment Plant intake along the Kelani River, Sri Lanka. Water samples were collected from four locations within the study area, including three upstream sites and one downstream site. Microplastics were detected at all sampling locations, with Kelaniya recorded the highest microplastic concentration (20.08 ± 10.19 mg/L), while Ambathale had the lowest (9.12 ± 3.89 mg/L). Three main microplastic types were identified: fibers, fragments, and films. Fibers and fragments were the most abundant microplastic types across all sampling locations, while films occurred at comparatively lower concentrations. Statistical analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between river water level and microplastic concentration (r = 0.883, <i>p</i> = 0.001), indicating the importance of hydrological conditions in microplastic transport. Fiber and film concentrations exhibited particularly strong positive relationships with water-level fluctuations (r = 0.940 and r = 0.904, respectively; <i>p</i> &lt; 0.01). Furthermore, positive associations between microplastic abundance and suspended solids suggest that particulate matter plays an important role in the transport and distribution of microplastics within the river system. The findings demonstrate significant spatial variability in microplastic contamination and highlight the influence of hydrological processes on microplastic occurrence and transport in the Kelani River. Despite their ecological relevance, most species remain poorly studied due to sampling difficulties and the limited knowledge available regarding their ecology, biogeography, and dispersal. In this context, habitat suitability modeling provides a valuable framework for identifying environmentally suitable areas for understudied marine taxa. Here, we present the first broad-scale habitat suitability assessment for nine Atlantic Ceriantharia species using MaxEnt models. Model projections were interpreted as environmentally suitable areas sharing conditions with known occurrences rather than as estimates of realized or potential geographic distributions. All models showed satisfactory predictive performance (AUC ≥ 0.70; TSS ≥ 0.40). Bathymetry emerged as the dominant environmental predictor, followed by temperature and slope, indicating that broad-scale oceanographic gradients strongly influence habitat suitability. Three major centers of environmental suitability were consistently identified across the Atlantic basin, encompassing the western Atlantic, the eastern Atlantic, and high-latitude regions. Although several models recovered suitability patterns consistent with documented occurrences, others projected environmentally suitable areas beyond currently known records, highlighting the influence of limited knowledge regarding species dispersal, population connectivity, and historical biogeography. External adhesion represents a potentially important but overlooked pathway of anthropogenic microfiber transport. Here, we assessed the occurrence of putative anthropogenic microfibers adhering to the skin of adult anurans in coastal wetlands of southern Brazil, evaluating their potential role as external biological vectors. We sampled 165 individuals from nine species spanning aquatic, terrestrial, and arboreal ecological groups across four sites. Samples were processed using stereomicroscopy, and microfibers were identified based on morphological features and characterized by size and color. Differences in occurrence and load among ecological groups were evaluated using hurdle models. Microfibers were detected in 28.5% of individuals and occurred across seven species and all ecological groups. In total, 889 microfibers were recovered, with highly variable loads among individuals. Transparent microfibers overwhelmingly dominated samples (94.7%). The widespread presence of adhered microfibers among sampled individuals is consistent with microfiber exposure during the sampling period and with amphibian skin acting as a substrate for particle adhesion under the surveyed conditions. In shallow aquatic ecosystems, benthic primary producers can affect nutrient release from the sediment to the pelagic zone, yet the relationship between benthic primary producers and pelagic N fixation is not well understood. Here, we explore the effect of benthic primary producers on benthic nutrient fluxes and pelagic N fixation rates in shallow, eutrophic Lake Mývatn, Iceland. In paired benthic nutrient flux and pelagic N fixation assays, we showed that sites with increased benthic phosphate release were associated with increased pelagic N fixation. In turn, during assays of flux rates, benthic phosphate release was negatively associated with dissolved oxygen concentrations at the sediment–water interface, which was positively associated with benthic primary producer abundances.
