The theological anthropology in process theology or Luther’s “happy exchange,” and works such as Elisabeth Gerle’s Passionate Embrace: Luther on Love, Body and Sensual Presence (Cascade Books, 2017) may be constructive conversation partners due to their more dynamic understanding of power and relation between God and humans. This is an excellent book for use in the undergraduate and graduate classroom. The level of detail leads to a dissertation-like feel but it offers deep research and insight on several important and related discussions in ethics and theology. Additionally, while the book presents a unified agenda, most chapters could be read as independent essays. In addition to the subjects of each chapter, Jorgenson’s novel approach to vocation and terminology in the area of ecological ethics offers new launch pads for theological and ethical exploration. The primary sources come from the Archives and Mission Library of the Francke Foundations (Frankesche Stiftungen) in Halle, Germany. The first German Lutheran missionaries, sent by the King of Denmark, arrived in Tranquebar, India in 1706. Local people helped them learn the spoken form of Tamil. The first Luther document in Tamil was printed in 1713, a Summary of his Small Catechism. The Catechism has been the central Luther document printed in Tamil ever since.
