Th is article interprets the motif of fi re as a key symbol, exploring its diff erent manifestations. Th e motif is expressed in three main forms: (a) burning as part of the magical practice, (b) appeal to supernatural entities whose names are related to fi re and (c) use of fi re metaphors. Dit nationale verhaal doordrenkt met militaire metaforiek heeft niet alleen ons denken over het landschap gevormd, maar ook het landschap zelf. Echter, nu de zeespiegel stijgt moeten er radicale acties warden ondernomen waarmee niet alleen het Nederlandse landschap ingrijpend kan veranderen, maar ook het nationale verhaal dat er mee verbonden is. However, the elements of time and space are often forgotten in using the term toleration for the Ottoman Empire. Hence, we either examine the Ottoman toleration with the standards of the European Enlightenment, or of the modern period.
