Several approaches to the persistence of objects over time are reviewed, including some well-known metaphysical problems (such as the ship of Theseus). The metaphysics endorsed follows Lynne Rudder Baker’s claim that objects of both art and nature are inherently vague, a thesis that supports the idea that material things can persist through change that causes their deterioration. The conclusion draws together the various ways that persistence over time can invite encounters with the past, centering on material presence and including continuity of function and use.","PeriodicalId":81260,"journal":{"name":"First things (New York, N.Y.)","volume":"7 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80074086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Looting and vandalism damage, time causes breakage and wear, and even restoration can inadvertently damage something that one sought to preserve. How ought we to treat objects such that their value is respected? Previous chapters have emphasized aesthetic aspects of artifacts but this one expands discussion to consider their ethical standing and our obligations to them. The initial section considers memorials and memorial sites, where integrity of location is especially important. The latter part of the chapter engages the complexities of restoration and repair, bearing in mind the tension between appearance (what can still be seen) and material persistence (aspects of artifacts that sustain the transitivity of touch). The chapter ends with a return to ruminating on touch and the phenomenon of replication by means of digital technologies.","PeriodicalId":81260,"journal":{"name":"First things (New York, N.Y.)","volume":"331 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80518361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first section of this chapter defends an “experiential” account of the aesthetic, acknowledging the importance of belief that the object of one’s experience is genuine. The distinction between historical value and age value is advanced to support the aesthetic character of old things. The root of encounters with old things can be found in the role that touch plays, even absent the ability to make literal contact with an object. Several avenues are explored that might explain what has been criticized as “magical thinking” regarding the “transitivity” of touch—the impression of communion with others who have also touched an object.","PeriodicalId":81260,"journal":{"name":"First things (New York, N.Y.)","volume":"118 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77432441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
