However, the program struggled to engage white Episcopalians in its sacramental vision and disregarded black Episcopalian voices, revealing its limitations and white establishment bias. While the GCSP showcased the potential for sacramental social action, it fell short due to constraints and failure to address the “urban crisis” as divine judgment on the very foundation of the church’s white establishment power. Instead, the program served as an incomplete penance, acknowledging the sacramental nature of the world and God’s reconciling grace, but ultimately inadequate as a sacramental response to colonial racial capitalism. Lacking the solidarity and critique required for efficacious sacramental action, the GCSP revealed the constraints of the white Episcopal Church to act sacramentally in a sacramental world.","PeriodicalId":8051,"journal":{"name":"Anglican theological review","volume":"66 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140486523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Postcolonial theory helps us examine Anglican history and theology through the lenses of colonialism and empire. This essay offers several examples of postcolonial critique of Anglican theology and elucidates the concept of hybridity in theology. It analyzes the revisions of the Book of Common Prayer in New Zealand/Aotearoa and Brazil as attempts to contextualize liturgy and proposes visions for theology in the Anglican Communion.","PeriodicalId":8051,"journal":{"name":"Anglican theological review","volume":" September","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139618023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
