As part of the grant, the hospital worked with a university team to evaluate the implementation. The evaluation plan emphasized quantitative analysis of medication errors, patient safety and hospital finances. As the implementation progressed, it became clear that the quantitative methods would be marginally useful; qualitative methods gained greater importance. The evaluation team added more interviews and several staff surveys to the evaluation. The results of the surveys helped the hospital team understand how well staff was prepared for the technology and how they were responding to implementation. This article will discuss how Solaris Health System in Edison, NJ, methodically addressed these challenges to achieve and sustain 95 percent compliance with BCMA, one of two major initiatives of the non-profit Solaris Patient Safety Institute, which was established to research best practices that could be shared with other organizations. Through meetings and interviews with frontline nurses and their managers, a multidisciplinary team (pharmacy, IT, nursing) identified 12 educational, technological and process-oriented issues, then developed concrete action plans to address each one (e.g., one-on-one software and device training, additional wireless access points, a \"hard stop\" to require scanning the patient's wristband). Without question, the issue of quality has become a focus of concern for consumers, politicians and healthcare providers and a priority for healthcare organizations in the 21st century. The nursing profession through the American Nurses Association has long recognized the need for quantitative evidence to measure the relationship of documentation to the impact on patient care. The following article discusses the ability of electronic healthcare information systems to collect nursing data using nursing terminology for care quality and outcome management. After four years, the organization is beginning to see its staff hardwire Lean thinking into day-to-day behaviors.
