In a recent study it was concluded that septicaemia in immunosuppressed patients was attributed to an oral source in 25-50% of cases (Oral surg Jrnl 1992). \"Increased susceptibility to infection accompanies both the cancer disease and treatment. The sex, age and geographical distribution are outlined, and common presenting features and its natural clinical course are discussed. In addition, the presentation reviews the achievements and disappointments of clinicians and scientists involved in cancer management and research in recent years. Microvascular surgery and the adoption of a team approach are selected as achievements which have provided immediate benefits for the patient. The rising incidence of cancer among younger age groups, the occurrence of multiple oral cancers and systemic metastatic deposits are used to illustrate disquieting trends. A health education and screening programme to raise public awareness of oral cancer and the critical importance of early detection, and the application of molecular biology, are suggested as two areas offering hope for future progress.</p>","PeriodicalId":79478,"journal":{"name":"British dental nurses' journal (Fleetwood, England : 1994)","volume":"54 4","pages":"14-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20701687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clearly this might affect the quality of their work. The study reported in the present article evaluated dental surgery assistant (DSA) job satisfaction in general dental practices in the northwestern region of England. An initial qualitative study determined the factors that DSAs thought affected their job satisfaction and these were evaluated in a quantitative study. Although the majority of DSAs found their work satisfying and enjoyable, a number found some aspects unsatisfactory and changes are proposed which may improve the quality of their working lives.</p>","PeriodicalId":79478,"journal":{"name":"British dental nurses' journal (Fleetwood, England : 1994)","volume":"53 2","pages":"2-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"20485539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
