One thing is certain: UAP are going to be part of the healthcare team for the foreseeable future. Nurses must educate themselves to be prepared to head the team of caregivers found in today's acute care facilities. Studying the literature and being aware of the role of UAP, the legalities of nursing delegated tasks, and legislative changes will help nurses cope with the ever changing landscape of medicine.</p>","PeriodicalId":79399,"journal":{"name":"Director (Cincinnati, Ohio)","volume":"11 3","pages":"99, 130-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"23271638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article will review various physical stressors as they relate to the capacity of the human body during handling (lifting, transferring, moving, and walking) of residents. When those stressors exceed human capacities, either from a single event or from multiple repeated events, there is an increased potential for errors, accidents, and injuries for both caregivers and residents, and a concomitant decrease in caregiver productivity. Ergonomic job design seeks to minimize those stressors. Fairly simple changes may add up to a significant reduction in ergonomic hazards with an improved resident quality of care and an improved quality of life for employees.</p>","PeriodicalId":79399,"journal":{"name":"Director (Cincinnati, Ohio)","volume":"11 4","pages":"151-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"24068319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
