The incidence of falls in nursing homes is prevalent with the current data suggesting that each nursing home resident falls 1.6 times per year. The consequences of a fall can be devastating to the quality of life of the nursing home resident. Therefore, this study was designed to identify falls as the symptom of a urinary tract infection and to provide treatment. Over 75 patients in a 138 bed community nursing home were followed for 6 months. Data suggests that majority of those residents who had a history of a fall also had a UTI In addition; the study data shows that severely demented patients who fall have a higher probability of having a urinary tract infection.</p>","PeriodicalId":79399,"journal":{"name":"Director (Cincinnati, Ohio)","volume":"15 1","pages":"22-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"28095554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This may have significant clinical and regulatory implications within a long-term care facility. It is very important for the nursing staff to try to prevent chronic constipation from occurring and when it does occur, initiate appropriate treatment to manage the condition. Prior to initiating any therapy a thorough resident assessment should take place to determine if the chronic constipation is due to other causes such as medications. There are several methods to prevent and manage constipation including changes in diet and lifestyle, as well as drug therapy options. Drug therapy should only be initiated once other types of therapies have not been successful.</p>","PeriodicalId":79399,"journal":{"name":"Director (Cincinnati, Ohio)","volume":"15 3","pages":"20-3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"28091936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
