However, the issue of whether such materials are suitable to the climate of Taiwan is a question that remains unanswered. The objective of this study was to assess the durability of three retouching binders under the external climate conditions of Taiwan. The binders that were tested included a watercolour coated with 5% acrylic resin Paraloid B72, an acrylic resin Paraloid B72 and a low molecule weight resin Laropal A81 using accelerated aging conditions that simulated the exterior climate of Taiwan. Alterations in colour, gloss, adhesion and solubility were measured to evaluate the stability and reversibility of the materials. The results showed that both watercolour coated with 5% Paraloid B72 and Laropal A81 had lower resistance to moisture, and thus are not recommended for use in exterior areas in Taiwan. Paraloid B72 remained more stable with good re-treatability after ageing, however it was still affected by UV/heat and condensation cycles. The observation of material behaviour in the study provides information for the selection of retouching materials for exterior Taiwanese traditional polychrome, and highlights the need for further systematic testing of suitable materials in the future.","PeriodicalId":7847,"journal":{"name":"AICCM Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44984297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will describe the working practice of Cheng Chen-po and go deeper into the knowledge of his artworks. This research has studied 74 oil paintings, and 25 of them have been revealed underneath layers. Having 34% of the artworks with different underlying composition paintings, Chen Chen-po becomes one of the most nonconformist painters in Taiwan. This study will also focus on the reasons why the artist decided to modify partially or completely the paintings, the nude female being the topic most changed while landscapes are almost unaltered. Economics, aesthetics, canvas availability and change of mind are the main reasons why the paintings were altered during his Japan, Shanghai and Taiwan periods. Furthermore, the reasons why the canvases painted in the studio were more modified rather than the ones painted outdoors will also be discussed.","PeriodicalId":7847,"journal":{"name":"AICCM Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44331445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the National Archives Administration (NAA) currently provides a controlled environment for the repositories of the National Archive, this archive has sustained damage and deterioration due to a legacy of compromised storage and inherent fragility of its contents. Of particular interest are the collective holdings of the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA), the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). Historically, these holdings were originally known as ‘The Railway Department of the Traffic Bureau, under the General Governor of Taiwan’, during Japanese colonial governance. This specific collection dates from 1895 to 1997 and includes over 10,000 engineering drawings. Previously, the NAA had implemented linings to both repair damage and aid in the preservation of the physical archives. However, this study compares this approach with an alternative humidification method using Gore-Tex® to relax and flatten these drawings on tracing paper. The focus of this paper is to evaluate dimensional change as a result of these treatments and to make recommendations in regards to their respective suitability for addressing the condition of the TRA collection.","PeriodicalId":7847,"journal":{"name":"AICCM Bulletin","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43610646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wat Pa Klang Thung, located in the Province of Pathum Thani, was submerged for four months, which caused serious deterioration to the mural paintings and wall plasters of its ordination hall. This article aims to discuss the results of the qualitative and quantitative assessment and analysis of the deterioration problems that occurred on the mural paintings and walls after the flood. The assessment was carried out with: 1) photographic surveys and manual condition assessments over existing architectural drawings and/or printed rectified photographs; 2) digitisation of the recorded deterioration problems using AutoCAD; and 3) quantitative assessment of deterioration degrees using AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel. The assessment yielded two sets of accurate deterioration data which were 1) a set of maps of the mural and plaster deterioration sorted by types of problems, and 2) a set of quantitative assessment of the deterioration. The deterioration maps could be used to identify the locations where each deterioration problem occurred, while the quantitative deterioration assessment could be used to more accurately provide a comparison of degrees of deterioration and to rank the susceptibility to deterioration of the walls compared to conventional subjective measurement.","PeriodicalId":7847,"journal":{"name":"AICCM Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49237341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eight colonies of termites were discovered tunnelling through the cracks in the concrete walls coming from plant boxes outside the building. Initial work required eradication of the termites’ source and reduction of moisture from the exterior wall. Preparation of the interior wall behind the panels included waterproofing, polyester insulation and application of a lime-based plaster. Several layers of RK-0 tissue, Chiang-mai tissue, gauze and cheesecloth were used as facing prior to de-installation. Treatment of the damaged artwork followed the five basic steps, (1) cleaning, (2) chemical stabilisation, (3) physical stabilisation, (4) aesthetic unity and (5) protection with ultraviolet stable varnish. After cleaning the back of the painting eaten by termites, the paint layer soiled with frass, was swabbed with peroxide, flattened with tissue, brushed with cellulose fibre-reinforced plaster and relined with de-acidified canvas. The restored painting exhibited shrinkage in size with wrinkling of paint. In lieu of infested plywood, it was re-mounted on a stretcher and reinstalled with a spacer from the wall provided for ventilation.","PeriodicalId":7847,"journal":{"name":"AICCM Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43922333","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty years after the Khmer Rouge regime (1975–1979), Cambodia’s Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21 Prison) is a compelling example of the struggle to balance authenticity, access, and sustainable preservation. The conservation of its genocide textiles, by far the most intimate and perishable of any genocide artifacts, has gained urgency for their repair, storage and display. A multi-year textile conservation triage and training project incorporated regional sensitivities to prioritise the victims’ clothing as a living and accessible collection. The project’s guiding principles were respect for the objects, suitability to the tropical climate, concern about future use and study, and sustainable practice. The resulting protocols modified prevailing conservation and archeological approaches, and integrated local values to apply a multi-faceted approach to reducing risks. These historic materials now carefully catalogued and better protected, are historic touchstones, revealing human stories and details of S-21. This physical connection to history gave the stakeholders a deeper understanding of conservation and why their role is essential to preserve their country’s legacies.","PeriodicalId":7847,"journal":{"name":"AICCM Bulletin","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43839645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
