This red thread is the history of labor. Sidney Mintz's thought-pro voking text presents various interesting conclusions after establish ing the reasonable premise that, in any circumstances, individuals need to endow their lives with meaning. In his dealings with sugar cane workers in Puerto Rico, the researcher was able to appreciate that, for them, life involved work and then everything else. And al though \"everything else\" was very important, work occupied most of their time and their concerns. To a large extent, it organized their lives. A person's occupation, the engagement in a particular activity, helped to forge an individual's identity, not only as a work er, but also as a person. This occurred whenever some degree of differentiation was made possible, even in activities involving labor which required few skills. Mintz highlights the work of paleros, un skilled laborers who prepared the ditches in sugarcane plantations, a job which required physical strength and a certain degree of skill when handling the tools of their trade. Doing the job well became a source of pride and personal dignity once the workers regarded themselves, and were regarded by others, as \"good workers.\" In one brief paragraph, Mintz reflects on previous contexts in volving coercive labor and points out that, under certain circum stances in times of slavery, labor took on an importance for individ uals which transcended the system in which they found themselves and also gave them meaning and dignity. He does not fail to men tion some of the consequences, which likewise exist in paid work, namely that workers become vulnerable (or more vulnerable) to unjust social systems once they voluntarily increase their output without negotiating any reward in exchange.
