It distinguishes between papillitis and papilloedema as forms of intraocular optic neuritis from the standpoint of subjective and objective symptomology and describes the etiology, symptomology and pathology of acute and chronic retrobulbar neuritis. Toxic amblyopia is discussed and clinical differentiation between primary and secondary forms of optic nerve atrophy.","PeriodicalId":78011,"journal":{"name":"American journal of optometry and archives of American Academy of Optometry","volume":"50 7","pages":"558-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1973-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1097/00006324-197307000-00006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15621236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, practitioners must be able to measure the dimensions of hydrophilic lenses with ease and accuracy. In addition, the lens dimensions must remain relatively stable to provide a proper patient response. This study was designed to evaluate methods of measuring the dimensions of hydrophilic contact lenses and to use these methods to examine the stability of hydrophilic lens dimensions under various conditions. Back surface curvature was measured with a series of templates. Thickness was measured using a modification of the optical method of measuring hard lens thickness. Power was measured on a lensometer after the lens surfaces were blotted. Diameter was measured with a hand comparator, making sure no pressure was placed on the lenses. With these methods, we were able to measure all the dimensions except back surface curvature to within hard lens standards. We found that hydrophilic lens dimensions could be altered significantly by storage in improper solutions, by dehydrating and rehydrating, and by extended boiling.","PeriodicalId":78011,"journal":{"name":"American journal of optometry and archives of American Academy of Optometry","volume":"50 7","pages":"546-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1973-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1097/00006324-197307000-00004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15621235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Removal of the epithelium caused a marked reduction in the oxygen uptake and an increase in corneal thickness. As the cornea regenerated from the periphery towards the center, there was a return to normal corneal thickness and oxygen uptake. The complete regeneration process took approximately four days. The results of these three methods correlated well and provided a good index for monitoring the corneal regenerative process.","PeriodicalId":78011,"journal":{"name":"American journal of optometry and archives of American Academy of Optometry","volume":"50 7","pages":"541-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1973-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1097/00006324-197307000-00003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15621234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Venetian blind effect provides a very sensitive test of central stereopsis while the Pulfrich pendulum provides a test of peripheral stereopsis. The use of a colored filter to induce the phenomena provides the ability to differentiate responses by eye. Five categories of response to the pendulum have been identified. Responses to the Venetian blind effect may supplement or complement the findings with the pendulum. The utility of the test results for treatment is undetermined though understanding the complexity of the patient's problem could significantly modify both the practitioner's prognosis and the patient's expectations.","PeriodicalId":78011,"journal":{"name":"American journal of optometry and archives of American Academy of Optometry","volume":"50 6","pages":"435-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1973-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1097/00006324-197306000-00001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15616800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
