Then I realized that little urology is actually treated or diagnosed at the industrial clinic level. In discussing this subject with physicians closely associated with industrial problems, they and I felt that you, as nurses, would get the most from an outline of some of the newer concepts pertaining to the genito-urinary system. Since nurses in industry are often obliged to give advice on urology problems, or are the first to see an acutely ill urologic patient, or must deal with post-operative or medically diagnosed urologic diseases, I will discuss the problem from that viewpoint. The subject titles I will discuss are, genitourinary tract infections and injuries, instability of micturition or incontinence, genito-urinary tumors, calculous disease of the urinary tract, obstructive uropathy and newer urologic diagnostic procedures. Genito-urinary Tract Infections Awareness by the medical profession that more than a simple infection may be involved when a urinary tract infection develops has led to the discovery of other underlying urologic disorders. In the past it was taught that cystoscopy and/or pyelograms were indicated only after an infection had occurred several times. The fallacy in waiting is that chronic nephritis and chronic obstructive uropathy are destructive diseases. So, if a long period prevails between infections, considerable renal damage will occur and repair or medication will not be helpful. The industrial nurse and occupational hazard control.","authors":"L Blaney","doi":"10.1177/216507996801600702","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/216507996801600702","url":null,"abstract":"American Association of Industrial Nurses Journal, July, 1968 I N CONSIDERING HER PROFESSIONAL FUNCTIONS in the field of health maintenance, the industrial nurse recognizes the importance of her position as a member of a broad health service team composed of physicians, nurses, industrial hygienists, safety engineers, and supporting scientists. It is the health service which initially assists in identifying a hazard, describes safeguards, and advocates their use. The industrial nurse is oriented to maintaining the health of employees at all levels of her company organization. One of the most important activities in which she participates is health education as applied to both individuals and the group. While this traditionally covers the field of disease, nutrition, and other aspects of personal maintenance, it also includes toxicology and industrial hygiene. Thus she can contribute to the control of hazards involving chemicals, solvents and fumes, and more recently, radiation, including x-ray and laser. The nurse should know the basic characteristics of laser, how it is used, something about the work environment and the number of people involved. She should be aware of the potential dangers and how they may be controlled at their source. Specifically, she will be involved in indoctrination, medical screening, and follow-up of the employees involved.
