{"title":"Heritage consistency: a predictor of health beliefs and practices.","authors":"R E Spector","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The Heritage Assessment Tool, in combination with questions relating to health and illness beliefs and practices was helpful in helping informants remember events in their childhood and also in garnishing health and illness beliefs and practices. The richness of the data in respect to health beliefs is an untapped reservoir. The experience of this small study leaves this author to suspect that countless health beliefs and practices exist that have not been recorded. It is highly recommended that this information be gleaned as rapidly as possible as the older generation will not endure forever. {"title":"Drug therapy in elderly patients: diagnosis of drug-related problems.","authors":"A Tesfa","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>Given the multiple diseases and vulnerability of the elderly to develop adverse drug effects, it is incumbent on the nurse to monitor and critically evaluate the patient's conditions. Attempts must be made to further develop and/or refine existing systematic process to delineate and prevent drug-related health problems. Non-drug form of treatment or use of the fewest possible medications (three or less) must always be considered. The wide variation from one elderly individual to another requires careful individualized monitoring of drug effects on an ongoing basis. Health care services for the elderly need to be fully integrated with primary health care. Primary health care approaches should be directed to emphasize the preventive concept of disease considering its limitation in different countries. Institutional long term care services should be provided only after other approaches have been explored, e.g. day care hospital and family care. Public efforts are regarded as a complement to family caregiving. Health personnel have started to change their attitudes toward relatives and look at them as an important source for the elderly. The co-operation between public services and family caregiving is being developed and strengthened. A lot of work still has to be done. It seems very important that research is carried out which focuses on the content of family caregiving. We need descriptions of the processes going on between the sick elderly person, his relatives and the professionals supporting the care.
