Thus, the deposits would be similar to the calculus formed by both the intraand extracellular calcifications . Key werds: human dental calculus, extracellular calcification , bacterial molds, later calcification, scanning electron microscopy As is well known, there exist the intraand extracellular calcifications of oral microorganisms in human dental calculus'-5) . The crystals are biological apatites including hydroxyapatite , Cadeficient and carbonate apatites'-8), although oral microorganisms were occasionally replaced by Mg-containing whitlockite crystals9-11) . The formation processes will be roughly divided into 3 cases : I to III1-541,12); case I: the intraand the extracellular calcifications occur at almost the same time, case II: the intracellular calcification first occurs followed by the extracellular calcification, and case III: the extracellular calcification first occurs. In case III, the bacterial molds will be retained during the time of the calculus formation , although the deposits of case III would become like a calculus of case I in the later formation stage. In this study, crystals deposited within the bacterial molds were investigated with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods Supraand subgingival dental calculi attached to human teeth, which had been used in our previous studies, 9-11,13,14) were also used in these observations. The fractured calculus were treated with 10% sodium hypochlorite (Na0C1) for 1 hour in order to remove organic debris9-'2, 14,15). This was followed by rinsing in running water for 1 hour and drying in the air. The samples were observed with a Hitachi S-430 SEM at 20 kV accelerating voltage after coating with a 10 to 15-nm platinum-palladium layer .","PeriodicalId":77624,"journal":{"name":"Showa Shigakkai zasshi = The Journal of Showa University Dental Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.11516/DENTALMEDRES1981.14.20","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64474208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The crystals which were constructed with wafer-like laminations linked together, formed rosette-like structures, or aggregated with each other. The main components were calcium phosphate with a small amount of Mg under energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. The crystals were frequently coexistent with Mg-containing whitlockite (WH) while no WH crystals were observed in the early calculus; thereby, the pH range of the formation sites might be lower than that of WH crystals.","PeriodicalId":77624,"journal":{"name":"Showa Shigakkai zasshi = The Journal of Showa University Dental Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64474290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of trial composite resins which were made with Clearfil SC II and antibacterial powder as a filler. Four kinds of antibacterial powder were used: two kinds of Cellewall; far infrared radiating ceramic materials YYT 1 and YYT 1A, Bactekiller; antibacterial zeolite and Zeomic; zeolite with antibacterial ion were mixed with Clearfil SC II at the content of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50 wt %. Cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans Ingbritt, was used in this experiment. Disks were placed in petri dishes and the width of inhibitory zone was evaluated after 24 hours. In order to evaluate the effect of saline solution, the disks were stored in saline solution for 24 and 48 hours and the inhibitory zone were also evaluated same condition. The conclusion is that the new composite resins containing Zeomic had a strong antibacterial effect against S. mutans and this effect of Zeomic was not reduced after storage in saline solution.","PeriodicalId":77624,"journal":{"name":"Showa Shigakkai zasshi = The Journal of Showa University Dental Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64474538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In rats anesthetized with thiamylal sodium,_ responses of 153 dorsal horn neurons to noxious heating or innocuous mechanical stimulation_ (light brushing) of the tail were recorded from the sacral and coccygeal levels of the spinal cord_ by extracellular microelectrodes. Of these neurons, 45 were low-threshold mechanoreceptive_ (LTM), 47 were nociceptive-specific (NS), and 61 were wide-dynamic-range (WDR) neurons_. In 22.2% of the LTM neurons, responses to innocuous mechanical stimulation were inhibited_ by electrical stimulation of large myelinated afferents applied to the ipsilateral hindlimb for_ 5 min. This conditioning stimulation (large myelinated afferent stimulation, LMAS) also inhibited noxious heat responses in 19.2% of the NS neurons. The inhibitory effect of LMAS_ on WDR neurons was nonselective in that both responses to light brushing and noxious heating were inhibited. Of the WDR neurons, 27.3 % were inhibited by LMAS. These results_ indicate that inhibition produced by LMAS is exerted on all 3 classes of spinal dorsal horn neu_ rons.","PeriodicalId":77624,"journal":{"name":"Showa Shigakkai zasshi = The Journal of Showa University Dental Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64473374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
