Seventy five patients were divided in three groups: control, treated with a modified maxillary splint and treated with fixed appliance and Kloehn headgear, each one having thirteen males and twelve females. The cephalometric radiographs were traced and analyzed by means of the \"Dentofacial Planner\" software. The results showed that there is little change in the pattern of growth and that the anteroinferior facial height increases in the three groups. There is no significant improvement in the maxillomandibular relationship in the control group, while in the treatment groups, the maxilla seemed to be retracted with a significant decrease in the ANB angle. The dentoalveolar changes showed that the appliance used in the second group is efficient in controlling the vertical extrusion of the upper teeth. In both treated groups, they are moved distally, leading to a normal molar relationship and the reduction of the overjet. Romito","doi":"10.1590/S0103-06631999000400010","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1590/S0103-06631999000400010","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of root concavities on clinical attachment loss (CAL) that was diagnosed at the initial evaluation of periodontal patients. CAL data were analyzed in the following teeth of 163 patients: upper and lower second and first bicuspids, cuspids, lateral and central incisors. Data were retrieved from the initial dental chart of patients seeking treatment at the Periodontics Graduate Clinic, School of Dentistry, University of Sao Paulo. Probing was accomplished in every tooth. The following measurements were recorded: CEJ-GM, PD and CAL. PD was performed at 6 sites: mesial-buccal (MB), central-buccal (CB), distal-buccal (DB), mesial-lingual (ML), central-lingual (CL) and distal-lingual (DL). Data from all teeth present were included when, at least, one site with CAL ³ 4mm was observed. After statistical analysis (Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA tests) CB and CL sites showed CAL values statistically lower for all upper teeth and for lower first bicuspid, cuspid and lateral incisors. Clinically, CB showed the lowest CAL values in every analyzed teeth, which was followed by CL. The presence of root concavities should not be underestimated either during clinical examination, diagnosis, prognosis, surgical or supportive periodontal treatment. After comparison of these dimensions based on normative standards submitted to a statistical analysis, specific values that were used as parameters in orthognathic interventions to correct facial deformities were defined. The statistical analysis revealed that the only lateral linear cephalometric dimension that did not exhibit statistically significant difference when compared to the samples of male and female groups was the point A. The goal of this paper was to evaluate the influence of the number of autoclave sterilization cycles on the absorbing capability and speed of absorption of paper points used in endodontic procedures. Four hundred and forty paper points number 40 were analyzed and the trade marks used were: Tanari, Tanari \"cell pack\" , Diadent \"cell pack\" and Conne. Ten points of each manufacturer received 0 to ten cycles of autoclave sterilization (134oC/15 psi/15 min). After each sterilization cycle, absorption capability and absorption velocity to 1% sodium hypochlorite solution were evaluated. Data were analyzed statistically by the ANOVA and Tukey tests. In conclusion, the trade marks which suffered less influence by the sterilization cycles in decreasing order were: Tanari, Tanari \"cell pack\" , Conne and Diadent. The best absorption velocities were observed in: Tanari \"cell pack\", Tanari, Conne and Diadent. Forty lower single-root premolars instrumented and filled with gutta-percha and stored in 10% formalin were divided into 4 groups according to the technique of gutta-percha removal employed, using heated endodontic pluggers and Peeso, Largo and Gates-Glidden burs. The experiment was performed in a chamber with controlled temperature maintained at about 26°C. For gutta-percha removal from the canals, 2/3 of the root length was calculated and approximately 4 mm of apical filling was left. The temperature of the external surface of the root was measured with a thermo-couple connected to a multimeter and measurements were made in 3 regions: cervical (about 3 mm below the cementum-enamel junction), middle and apical regions of a predetermined measurent. Analysis of variance indicated significant differences (p < 0.01) between regions and techniques. The complementary Tukey test indicated that the heated endodontic pluggers produced the greatest increased in temperature among the three techniques, and the Peeso bur produced the greatest increase in temperature among the burs used. Eight volunteers took part in this crossover, double blind design study performed in two phases of 45 days. The subjects were acrylic resin appliances containing four blocks of human dental enamel with artificial caries to evaluate fluoride uptake and remineralization by MFP/DCPD and Placebo dentifrices. After each phase the blocks of enamel were removed and the analysis of total fluoride (ppm F) and microhardness (Knoop) were evaluated. The results of total integrated areas under the curves of the two dentifrices treatments showed that the MFP/DCPD dentifrice produced a significantly higher fluoride uptake than the Placebo dentifrice (4508.55 ± 965.82 and 1485.51 ± 191.72, respectively) and the microhardness data demonstrated 34% and -14% of remineralization for MFP/DCPD and Placebo dentifrices, respectively.
