About 150000 200000 are admitted to hospital although 70% stay for less than 48 hours. Between 7000 and 10000 patients may be admitted to neurosurgical units. About 2500 3000 cases have surgically significant haematomas of which about 1/4 are extradural collections. Up to 5000 patients will die each year from their injuries. Survivors with severe permanent disability number some 75000 in the community. Quite apart from the financial cost to the health service there is a tremendous social cost. The fact that only half of those suffering serious injury ever return to work is just one measure of the scale of this human tragedy.","PeriodicalId":77412,"journal":{"name":"The British journal of theatre nursing : NATNews : the official journal of the National Association of Theatre Nurses","volume":"9 1","pages":"15, 18-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/175045899900900101","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21084737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many nurses feel this is something they have always done (Conway 1996). However, the extent to which nurses do reflect on their practice has been questioned (Conway 1996). Indeed, it has been identified that there are many different types of reflection and that simply looking back at our practice in a problem solving way will not necessarily in itself help us to develop our practice. The importance of reflecting in depth (Goodman 1984, Conway 1996) has been identified. Also in terms of professional practice the ability to deal with the difficult problems of practice and to reflect-in-action has been described (Schon 1983, 1987). Perhaps the greatest challenge to nursing is presented in the literature on perspective transformation (Habermas 1970, Freire 1973, Glaze 1998).","PeriodicalId":77412,"journal":{"name":"The British journal of theatre nursing : NATNews : the official journal of the National Association of Theatre Nurses","volume":"9 1","pages":"30-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/175045899900900103","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21084613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study was qualitative in its approach, using a questionnaire as the main research tool, to focus on thirty-three second year diploma level nursing students. The main findings were that 94% of the students felt that a set allocation to the operating theatre would be invaluable, as it would enhance the nursing care they gave to their patients on the ward. The study also found that the students did not have a real understanding of the theatre nurse's role, with only one third of the students seeing the theatre nurse carrying out patient care. This perceived lack of patient care had a major effect on them not wishing to choose theatre nursing as a career, once qualified. The results of this study suggest that the profile of theatre nursing must be raised to attract greater numbers of students to the speciality.</p>","PeriodicalId":77412,"journal":{"name":"The British journal of theatre nursing : NATNews : the official journal of the National Association of Theatre Nurses","volume":"9 1","pages":"22-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/175045899900900102","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"21084611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The implications of multi-prescription without strict controls could have a profound negative effect on patient health.
