As a result, a significant number of nurses, many working in general medical and surgical wards, have now completed a postgraduate qualification. Anecdotal evidence for one DHB indicated that there were mixed views with respect to how the increase in the number of nurses with postgraduate education had impacted on patient outcomes. Following a review of relevant literature the researchers aimed to ascertain from registered nurses working in acute medical and surgical wards their perception of the impact that further study had on their practice. A quantitative descriptive study was undertaken to answer the question of what impact postgraduate study had on the practice of those nurses working in medical and surgical wards of a District Health Board hospital? An anonymous postal survey was sent to registered nurses (N = 57), and senior nurses (N=25) working in acute medical and surgical areas of practice. The latter group consisted of 16 nurse managers and 9 nurse educators. The results showed that registered nurses, nurse managers and nurse educators all perceived the clinical practice of registered nurses as having improved in some degree as a consequence of postgraduate education. Avariety of academic-service partnerships are being used to support the clinical preparation of undergraduate nurses but, in today's demanding and fiscally challenged health and education environments, debate continues about how bestto provide students with quality learning in the clinical setting. This article reports the qualitative findings of a collaborative study undertaken to monitor implementation of a new model of clinical education for undergraduate nursing students. Three partners: a District Health Board (DHB) and two universities have developed, and are refining, a clinical education model based on the inclusion of student nurses in team nursing. In response to the question \"How well is the student integration model working?\" the qualitative findings, from a DHB and university staff perspective, suggest that students are better integrated within the nursing team. Registered nurses from academic and clinical backgrounds are sharing reponsibility for students' learning but there is a clear need to further develop relationships, skills and processes in order to maximise the student development. A volunteer sample (N = 18) of nurse leaders (Fellows of the College of Nurses Aotearoa (NZ) Inc) drawn from across the country was interviewed with respect to issues that affect their interest in participating in political action and policy work. The framework of stages of nursing's political development published by Cohen and colleagues (1996) was used as an interview guide. Respondents were asked to describe their own stage of political development, their perception of the political development of New Zealand nurses and nursing organisations at large, and also their thoughts on what could be done to better position nursing in healthcare policy development. In general, respondents agreed that the major nursing organisations in New Zealand (the College of Nurses-- Aotearoa and New Zealand Nurses Organisation [NZNO]) were moving toward increasing policy sophistication. Qualitative content analysis suggested five themes which, taken together, describe nursing's policy/political development in New Zealand: languaging; succession/legacy planning; Tall Poppies and Queen Bees; \"it's a small country\"; and speaking with one voice. The quality of nursing care patients receive has implications for both their recovery and long term health outcomes. Currently, due to a number of factors, nurses are facing increasing challenges to meeting the care needs of hospital patients. These include fluctuations in nursing skill mix and staffing levels, inconsistent availability of equipment and supplies, and higher patient acuity. The additional impact of healthcare restructuring on nursing has been reflected in the demand to do more with less. Consequently nurses are constantly forced to prioritise certain aspects of nursing care as being less important than others, resulting in some nursing cares being delayed or missed. In this study the concept of \"missed care\" was explored using a qualitative descriptive approach. Five registered nurses working within a New Zealand hospital were interviewed and the data obtained analysed using a general inductive approach. Two of the main categories were identified: 'the types of care that were regularly delayed or missed', and 'the reasons for regularly delaying or missing care'. The third main category identified was 'moral distress'. This related to the feelings of guilt and frustration experienced by the nurses as a result of delaying or missing care. It is argued that by understanding issues affecting direct care delivery to patients, registered nurses will be more able to effect constructive change in their work environments. Quality preceptorship is dependent upon skilled and knowledgeable preceptors who are committed to this role. A recent longitudinal evaluation of 21 Nursing Entry to Practice (NETP) programmes in New Zealand identified that preceptorship selection, education and support do not always receive the attention they warrant. Failure to plan preceptor selection leads to ad hoc selection and consequent allocations of many preceptors who may not have attended appropriate education, or have a desire to undertake this role. Such a situation is detrimental to the job satisfaction of both preceptors and new graduate nurses. High workloads, rostering difficulties and increased acuity in many clinical areas often prevent preceptors from attending appropriate education and that, in turn, impacts negatively on the preceptor's expectations and clarity with respect to the role. There is little doubt that a healthy lifestyle, and participation in health education and health screening activities, contribute to longevity. Gender is also considered to be a strong indicator of health and longevity, as women tend to live longer and healthier lives than men. There is abundant literature on older people's health but a significant lack of research specifically on older men. This study involved 59 community dwelling men aged 65 years or over, living in Wanganui (a city located in the North Island of New Zealand). The aim of the study was to describe the health education and health screenings older men living in Wanganui attended, and to ascertain the barriers and/or benefits of healthy lifestyle choices. Data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire. Findings from the study were that the majority of men reported good or excellent health. On average, men had participated in 1.6 health education programmes and attended 3.1 health screenings during the previous 12 months. Most considered there were no barriers to following a healthy lifestyle and on average identified four benefits to living a healthy lifestyle. The most common benefit reported was increased opportunities for socialisation. While it is acknowledged that more substantive research is required with a larger heterogeneous group of older men, this study provides useful baseline data on participation in health education and health screening programmes. The study also highlights that nurses need to facilitate and provide health education and health promoting activities that support healthy lifestyle choices in older men. This research sought to investigate a component of help-seeking related to health concerns. A health related help-seeking model, was adapted to frame questions for an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. Seventy-five students aged between 16 and 24 years responded and data were analysed using content and descriptive statistical techniques. Findings indicated that young people perceived the need to seek advice when unwell, needing support or information, are resourceful, and were motivated to seek help from a variety of sources. Parents and whānau formed one usual source of advice, but young people reported one of the best sources of advice as General Practice nurses and doctors. Barriers to seeking advice included distrusting sources, and concerns about confidentiality. Unsurprisingly, many respondents used the Internet for health information, although some mistrusted that information. Nurses need to be aware of the sources of health advice and support that young people choose to use.
