{"title":"Violence in the health care environment: strategies for prevention.","authors":"K A Worthington","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>As nurses strive to ensure the personal safety and security of themselves and their patients, collaborative work is the key. The building of trust and respect occurs when multiple disciplines work together to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to protect all persons in the health care environment from violent incidents. The most constructive means of prevention include participation in task forces, labor-management committees, and agreements obtained through collective bargaining. The health care reform movement is emphasizing the delivery of high-quality care to all. Nurses know that assuring personal security is the most basic step in meeting a person's health care needs. Nurses are well qualified to take the lead in violence-prevention efforts so that personal security is ensured for patients and health care workers alike.</p>","PeriodicalId":77295,"journal":{"name":"Nursing dynamics","volume":"2 3","pages":"15, 17-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19268437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The quality of the care we deliver will be jeopardized unless we shift to a more proactive approach, in which we create change, rather than react to it. The systems that will prevail and the individuals who make up those systems will develop the necessary skills, resources, and psychological stamina to succeed in the future. This will be accomplished through attention to people, for it is through people that all change occurs. Second-generation CNSs with advanced skills in process consultation, systems diagnosis, and human relations can assist in the achievement of these goals. The success of the CNS and the benefits to the nursing organization may be strongly influenced by nurse executives who embrace the concept of organization development, choose a skilled CNS for this purpose, and adequately prepare the organization for the utilization of this invaluable resource.</p>","PeriodicalId":77295,"journal":{"name":"Nursing dynamics","volume":"2 2","pages":"11-2, 14-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1993-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19231032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
