{"title":"An investigation of some aspects of stuttering-like speech in adult dysphasic subjects.","authors":"Lesley Caplan","doi":"10.4102/SAJCD.V19I1.417","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4102/SAJCD.V19I1.417","url":null,"abstract":"Some dimensions of stuttering-like symptoms of five dysphasic patients were considered and compared to several aspects of stuttering which are generally well-known and documented. The nature and amount of the dysfluencies of dysphasia were examined, and, although the amount of non-fluency appeared to justify the label of stuttering, the nature of the dysfluencies was much like that observed in normal speakers and not that considered to be the distinguishing features of stuttering. The loci of the dysfluencies in the sequence of dysphasic speech were investigated and the majority of subjects were found to experience more difficulty on the function words of language rather than on the content or lexical words which precipitate dysfluency in stutterers. All subjects experienced the greatest difficulty on words in the initial position in the sentence as is found with stutterers. For most of the subjects the frequency of dysfluency was highest on longer words and it was observed that subjects generally experienced more difficulty on consonants than on vowels. Under conditions of propositionality it seemed that there was some increase in the frequency and severity of the dysfluencies of dysphasics while the adaptation task yielded divergent results.","PeriodicalId":77232,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the South African Speech and Hearing Association","volume":"19 1 1","pages":"52-66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1972-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4102/SAJCD.V19I1.417","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70315304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data obtained revealed that the cleft palate children manifested a general depression in those areas sampled by the ITPA, in particular in areas testing expressive abilities. A transformational analysis of the language samples of the cleft palate children showed the relative immaturity of the syntactic structures used by these children. In spite of the limitations of this study, there was a clear indication of a language retardation in the cleft palate group. Several factors present in the early development of cleft palate children could adversely affect the acquisition of language skills. The implications of these findings for speech therapy are important.","PeriodicalId":77232,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the South African Speech and Hearing Association","volume":"56 1","pages":"17-29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1972-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4102/SAJCD.V19I1.414","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70315135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The therapy programme for a group of tongue thrusting children and their mothers is described. Traditional swallow retraining was used with the group of children in conjunction with exercises for strengthening and increasing oro-sensory awareness of tongue and lips. A therapist guided the mothers' discussions while they observed therapy. Results indicated that therapy was successful. The conclusions suggest further avenues of research.","PeriodicalId":77232,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the South African Speech and Hearing Association","volume":"19 1 1","pages":"30-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1972-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70315146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
