It is adjacent to the OR Suite and provides easy access to hospital services. A program was designed to meet the needs of waiting families, surgeons, and OR-PACU staff. A select group of trained volunteers assist family members while their loved ones are in surgery and during the immediate postoperative phase. Volunteers' responsibilities include communicating with families, surgeons, and staff; providing nonmedical information; and providing support for waiting families. A comfortable and caring environment fosters a positive image of the administration's philosophy and of the institution.</p>","PeriodicalId":77223,"journal":{"name":"Journal of post anesthesia nursing","volume":"9 4","pages":"224-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19058240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although a stand-alone computer initially could handle routine tasks performed by surgical staff, it is becoming increasingly apparent that a need exists for a more inclusive system that can manage the vast amounts of information necessary for effective resource management in today's Day Surgery Department environment. Local area networks (LANs) provide the necessary flexibility, expandability, and usability requisite of such a system. This article will discuss the benefits of using LANs in the Day Surgery Department. Specifically, an operating room scheduling and resource management software program is used to illustrate the advantages of LANs in the Day Surgery Department.</p>","PeriodicalId":77223,"journal":{"name":"Journal of post anesthesia nursing","volume":"9 4","pages":"232-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19058242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sources of primary knowledge concerning how patients describe their postanesthesia shaking experiences are sparse. This study presents data to expand the body of PACU nursing knowledge through patients offering information about the shaking phenomenon. In an attempt to categorize ways patients talk about their shaking experience, the research question guiding this study was this: How do patients talk about the postanesthesia shaking phenomenon? This descriptive research used an interview design. Telephone interviews were conducted with 103 subjects. Tape recorded interviews with the 43 subjects who remembered their shaking experience are included in the presentation of data. These data show that when patients were asked to talk about their shaking experience, they not only had memory of the postanesthesia shaking phenomenon, but they talked about their shaking experience in various ways. Further research is needed to promote a greater understanding of patient responses to this postanesthesia complication.</p>","PeriodicalId":77223,"journal":{"name":"Journal of post anesthesia nursing","volume":"9 4","pages":"214-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"19058354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
