Interest in this topic has been rekindled by the recent Saskatchewan case involving the death of a patient from variant Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (vCJD) and possible transmission of vCJD to 71 patients who may have been exposed to the same endoscope as the deceased while in hospital. In this article, I propose to address some of the concerns related to the reuse of single use medical devices by focusing on the prevalence of this practice, the legal risks involved, regulation of this practice, and risk management.</p>","PeriodicalId":77061,"journal":{"name":"Canadian operating room nursing journal","volume":"21 1","pages":"18-9, 28-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22348009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the perioperative environment one such avenue involves the group of health care providers supporting surgeons and patients during surgery--the surgical assistant. In Canada, general practice physicians predominantly fill this role. Another viable option promoted as a cost-effective alternative to the physician assistant is the Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA). The relationship between RNFA cost-effectiveness and role implementation and reimbursement is explored in this article. The importance of formally determining the cost-effectiveness of the RNFA through the utilization and development of research is presented.</p>","PeriodicalId":77061,"journal":{"name":"Canadian operating room nursing journal","volume":"20 4","pages":"16-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22250663","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
