{"title":"[Use of porous hydroxyapatite in reconstructive maxillofacial surgery].","authors":"N Worsaae, E Hjorting-Hansen, J Reibel","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>The use of porous hydroxyapatite (HA) (Interpore 200) in blocks as well as in particulate form is presented based upon experience from 99 maxillofacial reconstructions. The indications have been local defects of the alveolar process after trauma and resections due to tumors, the edentulous atrophic alveolar ridge, secondary residual clefts, and bone defects associated with orthognathic surgery. Clinical, radiologic and histologic findings after a follow-up period up to 3 years showed that there is an indication for HA blocks and particulate HA in orthognathic surgery, and that relatively stable results with few complications can be achieved with particulate HA in reconstructions of local bone defects and the atrophic alveolar ridge. Bone ingrowth through the implant material is seen when HA blocks are used. With particulate HA a fibrous encapsulation of the granules is formed. To a certain extent HA may replace the use of autogenous bone, but with major maxillofacial reconstructions it seems that the use of autogenous bone is still mandatory.</p>","PeriodicalId":76577,"journal":{"name":"Tandlaegebladet","volume":"94 10","pages":"393-404"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13327014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Six month's previously the patients own dentist discovered a rash in the soft palate, but no biopsy was taken until 6 months later when the patient was referred to the Dental Department, University Hospital, Copenhagen. The patient was referred to an oncologic department for evaluation. As radiation therapy was not indicated, surgery was performed. This included removal of the soft palate, tonsil and tonsil fossae. The patient had a palate plate done to relieve problems with swallowing. Patients with a long history of heavy smoking and oral lesions with suspicion for malignancy should always immediately after recognition of the lesion have more intensive examination and this should include a biopsy to establish a reliable diagnosis.</p>","PeriodicalId":76577,"journal":{"name":"Tandlaegebladet","volume":"94 9","pages":"357-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13547603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
