The following results were obtained: 1. By classification type, the ratio was 88, 16, 8 and 2% for Type III, Type I, Type IV and Type II. Type V was not found. 2. 22% of patients were male and 78% were female. The ratio of male and female was 1:4. 3. By age group, the ratio was 34, 23, 18, 12, 11, 1 and 1% for twenties, tens, thirties, fifties, forties, sixties and seventies. CMDs was found highly in younger ages (tens and twenties). 4. The ratio diagnosed Type III was 86.9, 97.0, 88.8 and 83.3% for tens, twenties, thirties and forties. Type III was found high ratio in all ages. 5. In all patients, right TMJ with disorder 37%, left TMJ with disorder 34%, bilateral TMJ with disorder 29%. There were no difference between right and left. 6. As can be seen from the above, young individuals with CMDs were clearly high ratio and many CMDs were diagnosed Type III through all the ages. Therefore, the results of our study suggest that young CMDs patients could be increasing gradually and complicating a pathological state.
","PeriodicalId":76539,"journal":{"name":"Shigaku = Odontology; journal of Nihon Dental College","volume":"78 1","pages":"107-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13289844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[The study of the relationships between the masticatory muscles activity and the craniofacial morphology in mandibular prognathism].","authors":"K Hirose","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Facial asymmetry is usually manifested in mandibular prognathism. This is probably because of the intervention of masticatory muscles in some way or another. Functional factors of masticatory muscles are also believed to be responsible for the relapse of facial disharmony even after surgical orthodontic treatment. In the present study, cephalometric analysis was made on a total of 43 patients with mandibular prognathism. The functional activity of their masticatory muscles was measured quantitatively by using electromyography. The data thus obtained were analyzed with respect to their bearings on the morphological points of reference given on posteroanterior cephalogram. Our findings are as follows: 1) At the time of maximal clenching with a bite splint, differences in the activity of left and right masseter muscles had a significantly positive correlation with the deviations from the point Menton on the frontal image, and a significantly negative correlation with the angles of the mandibular ramus to the median line on the frontal view. However, no relation was established between the activity of the masseter muscles and that of the temporal muscles on either side. 2) At the time of maximal clenching in central occlusion, differences in the activities of the masseter muscles on both sides were significantly and positively correlated with the deviations from the point Menton on the frontal image, and significantly and negatively correlated with the angles of the mandibular ramus to the median line. Also a negative correlation was noted between the differences in the activity of temporal muscles on both sides and the deviations from the point Menton. 3) These results suggest that the larger the deflection of the mandible, the larger the activity of the masseter muscle on the deflective side.
","PeriodicalId":76539,"journal":{"name":"Shigaku = Odontology; journal of Nihon Dental College","volume":"78 1","pages":"49-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13289762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Craniomandibular disorders management (1) Treatment planning].","authors":"Y Marumo, Y Hatano, N Kuraji, S Yokozuka","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Various treatment modalities have been reported in the management of the craniomandibular disorders in the half century after Costen reported his hypothesis on the temporomandibular disorders. Recent advances in the basic sciences such as anatomy, histology, pathology, physiology and clinical trials have brought us to this new era. We have been trying to establish our diagnosis and treatment modalities in the management of the craniomandibular disorders over the past fifteen years. In this series of articles we will describe our present concept. We will first discuss diagnosis and treatment planning. After the diagnosis and initial treatment planning craniomandibular management is usually divided into two phases. Phase I is the treatment of the stomatognathic system especially the temporomandibular joint. Behavioral modification and physical therapy and splint therapy are the most common forms of treatment. Sometimes, surgical treatment is required. Phase II is the compensatory phase of the occlusion consisting of occlusal equilibration, occlusal restorations, orthodontic treatment and gnathic surgery if needed. Another phase we like to add is maintenance. In this phase, home therapy, corrective follow-up and long term observation should be emphasized. The motivation of the patient throughout the management of the craniomandibular disorder (phase I, phase II and the maintenance phase) is essential to reach to a successful result.
","PeriodicalId":76539,"journal":{"name":"Shigaku = Odontology; journal of Nihon Dental College","volume":"78 1","pages":"150-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13289759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the effects and area which is influenced have not been studied. The purpose of this study was to study procedures and changes following administration of local anesthesia to the posterior ramus of the mandible. Twenty four patients with TMJ problems were used in this study. 0.5ml of 2% Lidocaine (epirenamine included) was injected into the most painful site upon palpation. The pain upon palpation test (following Krogh-Poulsen's method) was compared before and after 50 minutes. Results of this experiment were: 1) decrease of pain upon palpation was found not only in the site. In many cases subjective pain in the head and neck area was also reduced. 2) A significant reduction was found in the pain upon palpation test in the neck area. A highly significant reduction was seen in the Sterunoclydmastoid muscle only in the injected side. In the masticatory muscles. Also, reduction of pain upon palpation was seen in both lateral, medial pterygoid and digastric muscles in the injected side. 3) Contra side lateral pterygoid muscle and trapezius muscle also registered decreased pain upon palpation. 4) The mean values for the injected site were 5.7mm (S.D. 5.9) below the earlobe and the mean depth from the skin surface to the bony surface were 16.6 mm (S.D. 2.7mm). 5) The peak of the subjective effect were seen in one group in 20 minute later injection (early type) and in the 2nd group the peak were seen after 40 minutes (slowly type). 6) We did not experienced any paralysis of the facial nerve in this study.
","PeriodicalId":76539,"journal":{"name":"Shigaku = Odontology; journal of Nihon Dental College","volume":"78 1","pages":"63-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1990-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13289763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using a biological indicator as a monitor of sterilizing effect, the efficiency of sterilization was studied under various likely conditions and compared. The results led to the following conclusions: 1. Sterilization with EO gas by the film bag delivery system, because of this procedure being unable to be performed at a constant temperature, was shown to prove inadequate due to insufficient exposure to gas especially in winter season (when room temperature fell below 10 degrees C). 2. With the EO gas sterilization method using the film bag delivery system, which is believed to be effective within the ordinary range of humidity of the atmosphere, sterilizing effect was recognized to be affected by excess wetting of an object of sterilization that was caused by inadvertent manipulation or due to a predisposing attribute of the object, such as shape or outline. 3. All materials are sterilized upon being packaged. It is necessary therefore to make best choice of package material with respect of texture and size. Reuse influence to sterilizing effect. 4. The method of sterilization with EO gas using the chamber system has the advantage in that operating conditions are all automatically controlled. For this reason, there was not a single instance of failure to sterilize due to inappropriateness of temperature and humidity. From these results it is concluded that sterilising effect was affected by sterilization procedure and condition.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
","PeriodicalId":76539,"journal":{"name":"Shigaku = Odontology; journal of Nihon Dental College","volume":"77 4","pages":"1343-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"13633354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
