With cold comes dampness. Inadequate heating and haphazard ventilation produces condensation, leading to damp bedding, and this is the real killer. Wise folk through the ages have dried their bedding with hot stones, warming pans, hot water bottles, and electric blankets, and the need to do this seems to be accepted as a fact of life. By use of detailed questionnaire and interview, it determines the relationships between traditional food habits before immigration, neighbourhood differences and three time frames since immigration to the United States: under two, two to five and over five years. Significant change has occurred in food habits when comparing those habits practiced before immigration to those practiced in the United States. Of all the items studied, food items showed the greatest changes, parti cularly with respect to meat and dairy products. Some, but not all other food habits changed. The food habits of the respondents in Chinatown, although not com pletely traditional, changed less than the food habits of those living in Queens. Comparing groups by years since immigration, those respondents in the United States fewer than two years ago showed an appreciable change while those in the United States more than five years showed a reversal in some food habits to tradi tional food habits.","PeriodicalId":76506,"journal":{"name":"Royal Society of Health journal","volume":"102 6","pages":"268-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1177/146642408210200613","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18171523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The availability of middle-class ’refugees’ is a clear feature of much rural life and, often, their cumulative experience can be considerable. Frequently, the administrative, educational and pastoral expertise clustering in villages is very great. Unfortunately, middle-class activity in villages tends to be very sex-segregated there is no man’s equivalent of the Women’s Institute and often the men grow the flowers for their wives to arrange. While this is effective at organising flower shows, hunts and fetes and can assist groups such as the elderly with hospital visits, this considerable potential rarely seems to be applied to help the young. It would also be a way of integrating middle-class arrivals more adequately into village life and diminish something of the understandable hostility they engender because of their affluence, aggravation of house prices and obsession with visual amenities.
