Citric acid did not significantly increase the serum levels of tetracyclines when calves were fed low doses (6-8 mg/kg) of oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline. When the dose of chlortetracycline was increased to 50 mg/kg, addition of citric acid caused higher serum levels the first two hours after feeding. {"title":"Imported canine visceral leishmaniasis in Denmark.","authors":"E Bindseil, S Larsen, H M Kristensen, J B Jørgensen, S A Henriksen","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The first case of imported visceral leishmaniasis in the dog in Denmark, and probably in Scandinavia, is described. The dog, a 5-year-old female wire-haired bird dog, became ill about 21 months after it had returned from a year's stay in Spain (Malaga). The clinical signs were fever, lameness, enlargement of the popliteal lymph nodes and weight loss. A tentative clinical diagnosis of leukaemia was discarded after the microscopic recognition of Leishmania organisms in a biopsy from a popliteal lymph node (Fig. 1). The diagnosis was confirmed by the demonstration of the kinetoplast in the organisms by electron microscopy (Fig. 3 a-b). The organisms measured about 2 micron in diameter indicating that the species in question was Leishmania donovani infantum, which is indigenous to Spain and other Mediterranian countries. The dog was killed, and Leishmania were found in sections of mesenteric and popliteal lymph nodes, spleen, liver, lung and kidneys. The most interesting histologic features were interstitial nephritis, dominated by numerous plasma cells and membranous glomerulonephritis (Fig. 2). It is suggested that the glomerulonephritis is immune complex-mediated as it is in human visceral leishmaniasis. The risk of bringing dogs in and out of the Mediterranean region is stressed, and veterinarians are advised to have leishmaniasis in mind when they are confronted with dogs taken ill with non-specific symptoms after a stay in that part of the world, even if as much as two years have elapsed between the return and the onset of clinical signs.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"37 1","pages":"16-21"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15105826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"[Retinal dysplasia in dogs--a review].","authors":"H H Dietz","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Retinal dysplasia is a developmental aberration of the neuroretina characterized by formation of retinal tubules, malformation rosettes and folding of the retina. Retinal dysplasia has been reported in Bedlington Terrier, Sealyham Terrier, Beagle, Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, Yorkshire Terrier and Rottweiler. A hereditary basis for retinal dysplasia has been proved or suggested for all breeds exhibiting retinal dysplasia except Beagle and Rottweiler. Ophthalmoscopically retinal dysplasia is characterized by vermiform streaks often radiating from the optic disc. The reflectivity of the tapetum is often altered in these areas. Accompanying retinal detachment or cataractous changes in the lens may be seen. Extensive retinal dysplasia and retinal detachment or cataract may result in visual impairment or blindness. Eyes exhibiting retinal dysplasia may be classified according to the number of layers from the retinal structure that are represented in the rosettes. Three-layer rosette. Two-layer rosette. Single-layer rosette. Primitive unilayer rosette. The etiology of retinal dysplasia includes viral disorders, irradiation, X-radiation, intrauterine trauma and heritable factors.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"37 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15105825","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Bovine mycotic abortion in Denmark.","authors":"H V Krogh","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

A survey is given of the occurrence of mycotic infections associated with abortion in Danish cattle. During a period of six years a total of 748 samples of placenta material were examined. Mycotic abortion was demonstrated in 101 cases (14%). The case rate was significantly higher (21%) during the winter months from December through February than during the rest of the year (10%). Abortions occurred as from the 135th day of pregnancy, with maximum in the eighth month, where 45% of all cases were observed. A. fumigatus was demonstrated in 77 cases, Mucor spp. in 11 cases, Absidia spp. in 5 cases, and a mixed infection with A. fumigatus and Mucor spp. in 3 cases. In 5 cases the fungi were demonstrated by microscopic and histological examination, but not by culture. The annual occurrence of mycotic abortion varied from 10% to 24% of cases of abortion examined. The latter figure was recorded in a year following a particularly heavy rainfall in the month of June.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"37 1","pages":"27-33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15005269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In moose calves no lesions were observed. The lesions were mainly located in tendineous tissues. Predilection sites were the insertions of M. sartorius and M. semitendinosus at the tibia. Lesions also occurred in peritendineous and subcutaneous tissues. The lesions were caused by Onchocerca worms. The character of the inflammatory reaction was benign and onchocercal lesions in moose appeared to be of minor importance for the health and mobility of the animals, and also from meat hygiene aspects. The found worm shows similarities regarding morphology and localization to O. tarsicola. As the worm, however, is very common in moose and seems to be well adapted to this animal, the presence of an Onchocerca species or strain specific to moose, can not be ruled out.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"36 11","pages":"367-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17588758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

[Serratia-mastitis in cows as a herd problem]. [牛的沙雷特-乳腺炎是一个畜群问题]。

{"title":"[Serratia-mastitis in cows as a herd problem].","authors":"A Isaksson, O Holmberg","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Clinical mastitis with infection of Serratia marcescens occurred in a tied-up dairy herd in Sweden on a scale widely exceeding what has hitherto been reported in veterinary literature. The herd contained 37 milking cows before the disease period but only 14 at slaughter 21 months later in spite of some recruitment. A very large number of mastitis cases, usually rather mild and of short duration, had then occurred--during one single month not less than 47 cases. Hardly any cow escaped the disease. Instead, the single cows fell ill at short intervals with mastitis in the same quarter as previously or in another quarter. Antibiotic therapy in clinical cases, dry cow therapy and teat dipping had no obvious effect. Serratia marcescens was isolated in all 14 slaughtered cows in one or more quarters. The morphological changes were remarkably mild. Isolated Serratia strains revealed no distinctive marks compared with ordinary saprophytic strains in laboratory tests. Serratia-contaminated sawdust used as litter was possibly the source of infection and the milking machine possibly the tool for the transmission of bacteria to the udder, in the latter case by the aspiration of contaminated sawdust when the claw was attached or detached, or it fell off during milking. The pathogenicity of the bacteria and the susceptibility of the cows to udder infection may have been increased.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"36 11","pages":"354-60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17457835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The substance was administered as medicated feed, 6 mg/kg bodyweight during 10 days. At the same time the parasitic burden of the animals was investigated. A \"springrise\" of Trichostrongylidae, Trichuris and Capillaria was present during late winter--early spring following by a \"self-cure\" reaction. A \"springrise\" phenomenon in early spring was also evident for Chabertia and Dictyocaulus viviparus but excretion of eggs and larvae remained during spring. The effect of mebendazole on Chabertia was good while the effect on Dictyocaulus viviparus was incomplete probably due to arrested L5-larvae, which were unaffected by the anthelmintic during arrested state but after the deworming period developed into mature worms. Dewormed animals had a relative (%) growth increase which was 20% larger than the growth increase of non medicated animals.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"36 11","pages":"394-403"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17588761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
