{"title":"[Limulus test--a rapid and simple method for the detection of endotoxins produced by gram-negative bacteria in mastitis milk].","authors":"P Jonsson, L Björklund, A S Olofson, O Eriksson","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

According to the present study the limulus amebocyte lysate test (LAL) seems to be a convenient test to detect endotoxin in milk from udder quarters with and without inflammation. The correlation between endotoxin concentration and the results from the bacteriological investigation of 79 milk samples was good (Table I). Determination of endotoxin in 20 milk samples from cases of acute clinical mastitis with high cell count and a negative bacteriological culture showed that all but one had an endotoxin concentration of greater than 1.0 ng/ml milk (Table II). By using a micromethod of the LAL it is possible to detect cases of mastitis caused by gram-negative bacteria about one hour after the sample has reached the laboratory. In a preliminary field study milk from 13 cases of acute clinical mastitis were tested by a modified limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) test (\"cowshed test\"). A 100% correlation to bacteriological findings was observed (Table IV). By using the LAL test to detect mastitis cases caused by gram-negative bacteria great economic advantages and less risk for resistance problems can be achieved by using proper antibiotics. This is the fact in Sweden where the frequency of acute clinical mastitis caused by streptococci (100% of strains sensitive for penicillin) and Staphylococcus aureus (about 90% of strains sensitive for penicillin) is high (70-80%) and about 20% are caused by gram-negative bacteria, mostly E. coli.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"37 5","pages":"298-305"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15191381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Angular deformities were most frequently seen in small breeds of dogs following transverse diaphyseal fractures. The most common disorders were valgus and recurvation. Following preoperative planning and measurement of the components of the deformity, reconstructive osteotomy and stable, internal plate fixation was performed. Postoperative follow up time was approximately 32.9 months. On control, 8 dogs showed no lameness, 4 were slightly lame after exercise and 2 dogs turned out to be permanently lame at the end of the follow up investigation.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"37 5","pages":"273-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15191385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A report of two cases.","authors":"P H Poulsen, M K Thomsen, F Kristensen","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Two cases of cutaneous asthenia in Danish dogs are described. Case 1 was a Weimeraner; case 2 a Golden Retriever. In both instances the dogs had acquired numerous lesions of the skin within the first half year of their lives. The wounds exhibited good healing but led to broad, thin and pliable scars. Both dogs had in several instances received attention to gaping wounds, characterized by little tendency of bleeding. The clinical examination reveiled that the skin was hyperextensible and possessed pendulous folds, particularly behind the elbows. The degree of hyperextensibility was evaluated by means of a skin extensibility index. Furthermore, it was possible to manipulate the digital cushion in an unphysiological manner. One of the dogs were euthanised, and in case 2 the clinical diagnosis was confirmed by histopathological examination. No conclusion could be drawn regarding the mode of inheritance in the two cases, but existing literature strongly suggests the existence of a genetic disposition and thus, elimination of the disease related gene from any breeding program is of great importance.
","PeriodicalId":76242,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk veterinaermedicin","volume":"37 5","pages":"291-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15191378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
