DI has been reported to be as prevalent as 0.3% to 10% in permanent teeth. Clinicians may be challenged in managing both the patient and the dental anomaly. ##Aims The aim of these case reports is to highlight the presenting features of DI, treatment strategies and to highlight the need for a national clinical care pathway for children affected by dental anomalies such as DI, in addition to complex traumatic dental injuries and developmental defects of enamel and dentine. ##Conclusions Awareness of the clinical features and early identification of teeth affected by DI can allow for prevention, minimally invasive management, and where necessary, appropriate referral for specialist management of these cases. Sealing the palatal surfaces of young permanent incisors can limit the sequelae of pulpal necrosis in teeth with DI. Teeth with DI and complex anatomical presentation are predisposed to pulpal pathology and restorative management can be extremely challenging. Currently there are limited referral options for General Dental Practitioners who identify cases of DI in primary care settings in Ireland. This may lead to delayed treatment, prolonged symptoms and suboptimal outcomes for patients. A national clinical care pathway is recommended.","PeriodicalId":76043,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Irish Dental Association","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43152028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, dental information present on the internet is unregulated and varies in quality, accuracy and readability. ##Purpose of the study: This paper aims to assess the quality of the information online relating to third molars. Materials and methods: Two key terms (wisdom tooth pain and wisdom tooth extraction) were entered into Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines. Websites were assessed using the DISCERN and the HoNCode instruments. ##Results: A total of 60 websites were assessed. 2 websites were excluded in accordance with the exclusion criteria and 15 duplicate websites were excluded, leaving 43 unique sites. In the websites addressing “wisdom tooth pain” the average HoNCode score awarded was 40% (range 13-72%) while the average DISCERN score awarded was 43(range 24-70). In the websites addressing “wisdom tooth extraction” the average HoNCode score awarded was 35%(range 15-75%) while the average DISCERN score awarded was 35(range 25-69). ##Conclusions: The overall quality of the websites assessed is fair. This result shows that the reasonable patient may be misinformed by Internet sources on material risks. Clinicians should be aware of tools such as DISCERN and HoNCode and utilise them in the development of online content for their own practice.","PeriodicalId":76043,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Irish Dental Association","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43175393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Referrals were assessed to investigate if they included 22 information points as requested by our local standard (referral proforma). Data was input into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and analysed. Ten periodontal referrals proforma from similar Dental Institutes across Ireland and the UK were also compared to our proforma to investigate if our institution requests a similar level of information to others. ##Results: Referral analysis indicated that clinicians provided on average 12.9 out of 22 (59%) items of required information in their referral correspondence. Referrers utilised the appropriate referral proforma in 28% of cases. Use of this proforma was associated with a better standard of referral (17.9 out of 22 required information items provided, 80%) when compared with non-proforma referrals (11.2 out of 22 required information items provided, 51%). Analysis of other institutions’ proforma highlighted that DDUH requests referring practitioners to include more information than equivalent peer institutions. ##Conclusion: Periodontal referral letters to DDUH frequently fail to include sufficient information. Practitioners seldom utilise the divisional referral proforma, although its use is associated with improved referral quality. Simplification of the existing referral proforma and dissemination of referral guidelines to practitioners is recommended moving forward.","PeriodicalId":76043,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Irish Dental Association","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44979997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
