While emotional awareness showed a high positive correlation with language comprehension, the results suggest that many of these individuals have specific emotional awareness deficits which are not in line with their language comprehension abilities. Response to treatment followed a pattern frequently found in the general clinical literature. Namely tic frequency decreased during relaxation sessions but there was no generalization of effects outside of relaxation sessions. Pharmacological intervention, using clonidine, also did not reduce tic frequency. However, pimozide proved immediately effective in suppressing tics and this improvement was maintained at follow-up. Caries was furthermore assessed in a control group of mentally retarded individuals without DS. A total of 288 persons, 6-19 years old, were examined. The prevalence of caries free individuals was 40%. Institutionalized subjects had a lower caries prevalence than those living at home, probably as a result of differences in environment. Within all age groups, DS subjects had less caries but also fewer erupted permanent teeth than those without DS. In order to adjust for this difference, the DS subjects were compared with other mentally retarded individuals who were 1 year younger. After this correction, significantly lower caries prevalence was only found among the older age groups. When the results were analyzed on the basis of the number of teeth present and not on the number of tooth surfaces significant differences could not be found, even without the age correction. It is concluded that individuals with DS are susceptible to caries, though the prevalence of approximal caries is low, probably mainly due to the fact that DS subjects have more spacing.</p>","PeriodicalId":76014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental deficiency research","volume":"30 ( Pt 3) ","pages":"271-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14082867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fifty-three boys, ranging in CA from 7 to 18 years, took part in the jumping RT task. RT measurements were obtained from EMG of an agonist muscle (rectus femoris). There was a significant decrease in RT with increasing CA. Correlation between RT and MA was highly significant, but discontinuity in the distribution was found between MA of 6 and 7 years. The subjects with a MA below 6 were characterized by large variability as well as slowness in RT. RT was not correlated with CA holding MA constant among the subjects with a MA below 6. The subjects with a MA above 7 showed relatively small variability within and between subjects. RT in subjects with a MA above 7 decreased with CA holding MA constant but RIV showed no change. RT in children with a very low MA is prolonged by inefficiency which reflects difficulty in maintaining attention or arousal level. The efficiency in information processing may change between the MAs of 6 and 7 years.</p>","PeriodicalId":76014,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental deficiency research","volume":"29 ( Pt 2) ","pages":"137-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"15145564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A brief overview of the full range of both aided (static or graphic) and unaided (dynamic or manual) non-speech symbols and systems is presented. A hierarchy of difficulty, cognitive requisites, approximation to English (or other natural languages), abstraction, acceptance, etc. is considered. Advantages of non-speech communication are related to general input simplification, response production, receptive language/auditory processing, stimulus processing/stimulus association, and symbolic representation. The advantages of vocabulary limits and attentional facilitation for intervention with severely handicapped individuals are discussed.
