This condition is characterized by a dull, nagging, pharyngeal pain and a palpatory finding in the tonsillar fossa. Sometimes the pain is localized, or radiates to the jaw and ear and may simulate pain of dental origin. Radiographic demonstration of styloid elongation is readily made in most instances. The only effective treatment is surgical shortening of the styloid process. Eight patients undergoing surgery for elongated styloids are reported. Six were previously treated under an incorrect diagnosis such as oral, dental or temporomandibular disease, and subsequently mostly inappropriate dental treatments and exodontia were performed.</p><p>An evaluation of the intraoral versus the external approach is presented. No histological investigations have been done in respect of the longterm fate of these flaps after section of their nutrient pedicle. The histological pattern of the re-innervation process of heterotopically transposed lingual flaps in the oral cavity is evaluated in this paper. Two cases are reported: in the first, the tongue flap was used to repair the vermilion of the lower lip and in the second, for the closure of a post-traumatic defect of the hard palate. There are two basically different malformations of one side of the mandible which we call hemimandibular hyperplasia and hemimandibular elongation respectively. We are convinced that there exist pure and mixed forms of both growth anomalies because we have observed several such clinical cases. The stimulus for the abnormal growth either lies within the fibrocartilaginous layer or is produced by it. Different histological patterns within the condylar growth zone were seen in the two anomalies. The pathophysiological bases of the abnormal growth are discussed. They seem to contribute to the understanding of the normal and abnormal mandibular growth and consequently also of many of the mandibular anomalies. The explanations are demonstrated by the illustrations of some cases.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":76010,"journal":{"name":"Journal of maxillofacial surgery","volume":"14 ","pages":"Pages 183-208"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1986-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0301-0503(86)80290-9","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"14585567","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
