Resistance breeding is considered a durable, effective, and eco-friendly approach to control BB. Several BB resistance (R) genes have been identified that confer resistance against various strains of Xoo. The dynamic nature of this pathogen needs proper knowledge of pathotype composition and its virulence among the diverse Xoo strains which is imperative for designing a resistance breeding program. Methods-In this study, we conducted an extensive survey to collect BB infected samples from diverse rice-growing regions of Tamil Nadu. Further, the samples were identified as Xoo through morphological and molecular identification methods. The pathotyping and virulence profiling of Xoo isolates was carried out on a set of rice differentials consisting of 22 near-isogenic lines (NILs) of IR24 possessing different BB resistance genes under glasshouse conditions during Kharif 2021-2022. Results-Based on the disease reaction in 22 rice BB differentials (IRBB lines), the Xoo isolates were grouped into six pathotypes (I II, III, IV, V, and VI). Further, the virulence analysis revealed that the near-isogenic lines possessing single R gene and gene pyramids were susceptible to about 20-88% and 4-20% respectively to Xoo isolates. R genes and their pyramids such as (Xa7, Xa21, Xa4+xa5+Xa21, Xa4+xa5+xa13 Xa4+xa13+Xa21, xa5+xa13+Xa21, and Xa4+Xa21+xa5+Xa21) were found to be effective against all the pathotypes in Tamil Nadu. The pathotype III was predominantly distributed (40%) over the Tamil Nadu. The isolates found in the pathotypes I and II are more virulent and in the pathotypes V, VI are less virulent. The current study identified the virulence nature of diverse Xoo isolates and the effectiveness of resistance (R) genes against the Xoo isolates. Therefore, the effective R genes identified in this study could be an effective source for resistance breeding program against BB in Tamil Nadu.\u0000","PeriodicalId":7599,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Science Digest – A Research Journal","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85941681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Farmers typically employ insecticides as preventative and curative management which causes needless issues. Although integrated pest management (IPM) has been recommended to nullify the ill effects of chemicals pesticides, farmers are hesitant to employ the IPM’s components and mostly rely on pesticides. IPM integrates knowledge-based techniques of biological, cultural, physical, host plant resistance and chemical control strategies in order to limit pest populations considered economically acceptable. Present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of IPM strategy improving upon the crop productivity. Methods: An Integrated Pest Management (IPM) module comprising of spacing, introduction of natural enemies, application of botanicals, entomopathogenic fungi, installation of yellow sticky traps and chemical pesticide (Thiamethoxam) was assessed in comparison with Farmers Practice (FP) (usual routine followed by the farmer during the cropping season) in the farmer’s fields. Result: The pooled mean data of per cent leaf incidence by Nephotettix virescens ranged between 4.59-6.25% during the two years research in IPM module, while in farmers practices mean leaf damage varied between 8.09-8.61%. Similarly, the leaf damage caused by Nilaparvata lugens ranged between 4.88-7.61% as compared to 8.64-10% in the farmers practices. The BC ration was recorded to be 1: 7.6 and 1:6.85 during 2018 and 2019, respectively.","PeriodicalId":7599,"journal":{"name":"Agricultural Science Digest – A Research Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135420230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Developing rice cultivars with tolerance to submergence is the best strategy to circumvent the situation. In Eastern India a vast reservoir of rice genotypes exists grown in diverse agro-climatic situation under rainfed condition. Screening rice genotypes under submergence stressed condition by observing morphological traits combined with molecular marker approach helps to identify the genotypes having innate capacity to survive under flooding condition more precisely than either of the approach alone. The present study was framed to identify the landraces and genotypes having the presence of desired genes which will helpful for future breeding program. Methods: Fifty rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes were evaluated for submergence tolerance using both morphological and molecular characterization in the field and laboratory respectively. Six stress indices, namely elongation%, survival%, mortality%, relative growth index, dry mass% and recovery rate, were examined in the field seven days and fourteen days after submergence. The genotypes were screened with SSR markers to identify the presence of the desired gene. Result: Based on morphological and molecular screening, out of all rice genotypes, Brahmabalak, Jaladhi 1-2, Jaldubi, Kerala Sundary, China IRRI, Sonachur, Pravat, Pankaj, Ranjit SUB1 and Bahadur SUB1 showed higher levels of tolerance to submergence than the tolerant control Swarna SUB1.
