It is effective in all age groups but better in old and adults than in children and better in females than in males. It gave a cure rate of 60.6% after single intramuscular dose of 3 mg/kg body weight. Second dose after three months gave 94.4% cure rate and a third injection after further two months gave 100% cure rate. So, the drug cannot be used in the treatment of bilharziasis as a single dose course.</p>","PeriodicalId":75813,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian journal of bilharziasis","volume":"3 1","pages":"107-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12209795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Significant elevation in the serum enzyme level was found in all bilharzial cases which generally ran parallel to the course of the disease, being more marked in hepatosplenomegalic cases than in cases which showed no clinical signs of liver or spleen involvement. However, it was observed that the enzyme level was lower ascitic than in nonascitic cases. For serum creatinine concentration, no significant variation from normal value was observed in the group of patients with active urinary, active intestinal, mixed infections of bilharziasis and bilharzial hepatosplenomegalic cases. However, a very highly significant decrease in serum creatinine concentration was observed in the group of patients with bilharzial hepatosplenomegaly and ascites. Serum LAP activity and creatinine concentration in the group of patients with cancer bladder of bilharzial etiology showed no statistical variation from normal values.</p>","PeriodicalId":75813,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian journal of bilharziasis","volume":"3 2","pages":"183-97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"12213006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was found that there is a significant increase in LAP activity in the urine of all groups of patients studied. Again this increase ran parallel to the course of the disease in bilharzial cases. In addition, the drug was tested against one strain of each of Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi A. B and C. Minimum inhibitory concentration (M.I.C.) of the drug for each organism, and its bactericidal concentration were determined. The amount of the drug excreted in urine of patients receiving labelled Bilharcid Sb 124, after 2, 6, 8 and 10 hr. of administration was determined. In this work, the amount of bilharcid excreted in urine/ml urine is below its M.I.C. for most bacterial species, examined.</p>","PeriodicalId":75813,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian journal of bilharziasis","volume":"3 2","pages":"233-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11989584","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Infection was done by I.P. route with 50 to 60 cercaria of S. mansoni (puerto Rican strain) per animal. The safe single i.v. dose of a solution containing one mg of SQ 18506 dissolved in 0.06 ml dimethylsulfoxide was 0.003 ml/g b.w. of mice. Schistosome autoradiograms were clearly demonstrated one day after that dose injected in each mouse 50 days post-infection. However, hepatic autoradiograms were visible 14 days after 2 doses of our drug to each infected mouse. The higher the concentration of SQ 18506 14C in the culture medium the darker were the schistosomes in the autoradiograms and the greater their total d.p.m/mg. Tissue distribution studies after 2 1/2 doses of our drug/mouse revealed that schistosome total d.p.m/mg dry-weight was 50 times more than that of its liver. The latter d.p.m/g wet-weight was slightly higher than that of one ml of mouse blood.</p>","PeriodicalId":75813,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian journal of bilharziasis","volume":"3 1","pages":"73-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1976-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11291316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The bilharziasis patients were divided into two groups according to the type of infeciton. Those with bilharziasis haematobian type of infection and those with the bilharziasis mansoni type. Each group was further subdivided into subgroups according to the severity and progress of the disease. The activities of arylsulfatase A and B were significantly elevated in all the groups of patients studied and it is evident that there is a progressive increase with the progress of the disease in both types of bilharziasis infections (the haematobian and mansoni types).
