In this paper, we study the effects of these parameters on CT imaging using both a theoretical model and simulated images. An exact treatment of the point spread function in our model, which properly accounts for aliasing and reconstruction algorithm effects, is given for the case of parallel beam geometry. It is shown that it is always desirable to make the sample spacing as small as possible. In particular, aliasing artifacts are shown to decrease as sample spacing is decreased, both in the theoretical point spread function and in simulated CT images. Furthermore, abasing is shown to destroy the spatial invariance of the point spread function, whose shape will then depend on the exact location of the point in the scan field. Also investigated is the “volcano effect”, in which the point spread function develops a central depression when small sample spacing is used. It is shown that this effect produces no unusual distortions in the reconstruction of objects larger in diameter than the beam width; and further, that an attempt to avoid the volcano effect by means of inadequate sampling can have disastrous consequences for the reconstructed image.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":75732,"journal":{"name":"Computerized tomography","volume":"4 3","pages":"Pages 189-206"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0363-8235(80)90023-X","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18439514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A CT based treatment planning system has been in routine clinical use in the Princess Margaret Hospital for the past 6 months. In this report, a review is given of our practical experience. The benefit of CT-aided treatment planning lies in three areas: (a) tumour and normal tissue localization, (b) more accurate dose computations and (c) tumour regression information. Although the efficacy of CT-aided treatment planning can only be determined with systematic clinical trials evaluating better tumour control and reduced normal tissue complications, such studies will not provide data for a number of years to come. However, we are considering a number of specific sites in detail from the point of view of tissue density determination and corresponding dosage calculations. The results of the upper half body irradiation study are reviewed and a proposed cervix study is summarized. Two specific patient cases are considered to illustrate practical clinical situations which are not suitable for evaluation in prospective clinical trials. In addition to the detailed studies, the main impact of CT scanning in radiotherapy may well lie in the improvements that are made in individual treatment procedures.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":75732,"journal":{"name":"Computerized tomography","volume":"4 1","pages":"Pages 55-65"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/0363-8235(80)90042-3","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18381068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
