First, we compare perceptions and attitudes toward partner violence against women between native-born popula-tion and Latin-American immigrants in Spain. And second, we explore correlates of attitudes toward reporting partner violence against women among Latin-American immigrants. Data from the Spanish population was obtained from na-tional representative surveys. Latin-American immigrants were recruited from a community sample of 399 adult partici-pants. Results showed significant differences in attitudes toward intimate partner violence against women between native-born and immigrants. Analyses also showed that positive attitudes toward reporting among immigrants were more likely among those respondents who were less tolerant, perceive partner violence against women as a pervasive problem in soci-ety, and tend not to blame the victims. Findings are discussed in light of recent literature on the relevance of public atti-tudes toward intimate partner violence.","PeriodicalId":75160,"journal":{"name":"The open family studies journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"31-38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77560593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the study was to describe the rewards of parents of children with a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Nineteen birth, foster or adoptive parents were asked to answer the following question: \"What are the rewards of parenting a child with a FASD?\" The data were analyzed using multidi- mensional scaling and cluster analysis. Four clusters resulted. Parents indicated that they saw the children's effort, growth, and accomplishment in a variety of domains as encouraging. Parents also reported feeling appreciated by the children. Re- sults suggest that rewarding parenting experiences with children who have alcohol-related disabilities are multiple, diverse and, when compared to the literature, largely consistent. The results lend credibility to the existing literature on the re- wards of parenting children with developmental disabilities, and FASD in particular.","PeriodicalId":75160,"journal":{"name":"The open family studies journal","volume":"11 1","pages":"23-30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82078542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relationships between CPCS and CMCS and measures of pa- rental control and parent-child relational qualities were also investigated. Although Chinese parents had high expectations about their children, they were not strict in parental discipline. The CPCS and CMCS scores were significantly correlated with measures of parental control and perceived parental endorsement of traditional Chinese parenting beliefs in early adolescent years. While CPCS and CMCS had weak concurrent and prospective relationships with parent-child relational qualities measures, the observed relationships were moderated by parental psychological control. The theoretical and prac- tical implications of the findings are discussed.","PeriodicalId":75160,"journal":{"name":"The open family studies journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"7-16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78425121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, few studies have attempted to clarify how these two factors influence adult attachment styles when taken into account simultaneously. In order to examine the relationship between adult at- tachment, perceived parenting, and family functioning, data derived from 1,141 males (29.6%) and 2,709 females (70.4%) were analyzed in the present study. The results indicated that perceived parenting predicted adult attachment and family functioning, while family functioning failed to significantly predict adult attachment. The present study also highlighted the fact that paternal and maternal parenting played equally important roles in shaping adult attachment styles of off- spring.","PeriodicalId":75160,"journal":{"name":"The open family studies journal","volume":"1 4 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83053688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
