These waves travel along the magnetic field lines, coupling the outer magnetosphere with the ionosphere. However, in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory, the shear mode Alfvén wave does not carry a parallel electric field that could accelerate auroral particles. This can be modified by including kinetic effects, which lead to a parallel electric field when the perpendicular wavelength becomes comparable to the electron inertial length or the ion acoustic gyroradius. These small perpendicular wavelengths can be formed by phase mixing, ionospheric feedback, or nonlinear effects. Kinetic Alfvén waves are further constrained by their interaction with the ionosphere, which acts as a reflector for these waves. In addition, the strong plasma gradients in the topside ionosphere form an effective resonator that leads to fluctuations on time scales of seconds. These rapidly changing parallel electric fields can lead to broadband acceleration of auroral electrons, often called the Alfvénic aurora. Such interactions do not only take place in Earth's magnetosphere, but have also been observed in Jupiter's magnetosphere by the Juno satellite.</p>","PeriodicalId":74694,"journal":{"name":"Reviews of modern plasma physics","volume":"7 1","pages":"6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9825542/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10515880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamo-generated, global, magnetic fields provide a background for our solar-terrestrial environment. Probing the processes within the dynamos is a significant theoretical and computational challenge and any window into interior dynamics greatly increases our understanding. Such a window is provided by exploring rapid dynamics, particularly MHD waves about the dynamo-defined basic state. This field is the subject of current attention as geophysical observations and numerical modellings advance. We here pay particular attention to torsional Alfvén waves/oscillations and magnetic Rossby waves, which may be regarded as typical axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric modes, respectively, amongst a wide variety of wave classes of rapidly rotating MHD fluids. The excitation of those waves has been evidenced for the Earth - whilst their presence has also been suggested for Jupiter. We shall overview their dynamics, summarise our current understanding, and give open questions for future perspectives.</p>","PeriodicalId":74694,"journal":{"name":"Reviews of modern plasma physics","volume":"7 1","pages":"5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9792417/pdf/","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"10457769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
