Here we report on a VLTI/GRAVITY observation that revealed the close companion to be a 0.58M ⊙ star at a projected separation ρ = 100.2 mas ↔ 7.4 au, confirming the system to be a quintuple. The discovered companion explains the X-ray emission of p Pup detected by eROSITA. Moreover, we also find that the isochrone age of 100−20+50  Myr of p Pup is incompatible with the minimum cooling age of 350 Myr for the 1.3 kau wide WD companion, suggesting that either they are not coeval or that the WD was formed through a non-trivial channel.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":"52 49","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141345265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This line is detected at 3σ above the noise in the adjacent continuum in HD 143807 but not detected in HD 16727. The synthesis of this line, using the current atomic parameters available in NIST, confirms the large overabundance of mercury in HD 143807, about +4.60 dex, in very good agreement with the excess derived in earlier studies from the 3983.93 Å line. At the overabundance expected for HD 16727 (3.90 dex), the line is predicted to contribute a 1% absorption feature which is not seen in the observed spectrum.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":"31 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141353755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent researches indicate that the X-ray emission from SN 1987A will increasingly originate from its ejecta in the years to come. In a previous study, we thoroughly examined the proficiency of XRISM-Resolve in identifying signatures of shocked ejecta in SN 1987A, synthesizing the XRISM-Resolve spectrum based on a state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamic simulation. However, following the satellite’s launch, a technical issue arose with the XRISM instrument’s gate valve, which failed to open, thereby affecting observations with the Resolve spectrometer. Here, we update our analysis, reevaluating our diagnostic approach under the assumption that the gate valve remains closed. We find that, even with the reduced instrumental capabilities, it will be possible to pinpoint the ejecta contribution through the study of the line profiles in the XRISM-Resolve spectrum of SN 1987A.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":"85 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141524960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the scarcity of bright objects in a typical HST field of view, Poisson uncertainty and Cosmic Variance can significantly hinder calculations of the total integrated background light from galaxies. Since the existing SKYSURF analysis cannot constrain bright galaxy counts well, we catalog the bright object number density by cross-matching SKYSURF pointings with objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Here, we present the cross-matched catalogs and measure the distribution of integrated galaxy light from the SDSS objects. We find a median integrated light level in the r-band of 2.45 nW m−2 sr−1, consistent with previous findings given the level of incompleteness in SDSS and suggesting that SKYSURF pointings are in general not substantially biased toward object-rich fields on the sky.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":" 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141363359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We report on new very deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging that seems to be in tension with the SMBH runaway scenario but is consistent with the bulgeless edge-on galaxy scenario. The new observations were aimed at detecting two key features expected in the SMBH scenario, namely, the bow shock formed where the SMBH meets the surrounding medium, and a counter stellar wake created by another binary SMBH hypothesized as part of the ejection mechanism. Neither of these two features appears to be present in the new images, as would be expected in the edge-on galaxy scenario.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141255972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the selected stars have very accurate Gaia DR3 distances. Most of the selected stars are very young B stars and several of them are young stellar objects. From the analysis of selected stars, the distance to NGC 6530 is found to be 1318 pc. The two very red stars VAJ 304 and 338 have little bit less proper motion than other members of the NGC 6530 and their Mv values are found to be −3.57 and −3.68 respectively. They are much brighter than K5 III RGB stars and less luminous than massive K5 red supergiants. It is likely VAJ 304 and VAJ 338 are not members of NGC 6530 they may be field K5 type AGB or post-AGB stars. Further study of these two stars is needed.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":"69 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141256301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Stellar evolution codes struggle after carbon burning, and either stop or adopt numerical simplifications missing crucial physics. The use of small nuclear reaction networks (NRN) that account for energy production but bypass weak reactions is typical, but insufficient to study the dynamics of the collapse. We advise against the use of progenitors computed with small NRN in expensive multidimensional simulations of core collapse, bounce, (jet formation), and explosion.","PeriodicalId":74684,"journal":{"name":"Research notes of the AAS","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141256122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
