Healthcare workers, including radiologic technologists, need to be aware of the possible impli- cations of their online postings. Radiologic technologists are extensively using and accessing social media sites and should have appropriate profes- sional boundaries. {"title":"Near Miss Reporting.","authors":"Janine M Jones, Michael F Newman","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Imaging is no stranger to patient safety events. There was a tremendous opportunity at WakeMed in North Carolina to change the safety culture of the imag- ing services department and provide staff with a system that rewarded them for identifying safety risks. Most staff could articulate the difference between a near miss and an actual event, but very few staff knew how to report a near miss. Staff who did know how to report a near miss believed the online process was too lengthy. Staff also reported a fear of punitive action associated with reporting events. Imaging services leadership successfully developed and implemented a \"Good Catch\" program. One of the most important objectives of the program was to remove the negative stigma associated with near miss reporting.
","PeriodicalId":74636,"journal":{"name":"Radiology management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"36865935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Defining Population Health and Implications for Radiology.","authors":"Ronald V Bucci","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Most definitions of population health include improved patient health, reduced inpatient stays and proce- dures, holistic care of the entire population of a country, and a general approach to improve the quality of healthcare. However, there seems to be no mention of payment for services and resources for reimbursement. The term population health can be considered a philosophy of a new model of healthcare based upon future expectations from current laws and studies from the federal government, most notably through the ACA, and healthcare organizations. Radiology departments may perform fewer procedures in the future and receive less money for these complet- ed procedures. Management will need to adjust budgets and staffing to reflect changes. Radiology departments will need to continue the current trend of doing more with less.
","PeriodicalId":74636,"journal":{"name":"Radiology management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"36865933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile devices, such as the iPad, are able to display radiologic images in such a way that radiologists are able to use them successfully. {"title":"Comparison of procedure costs of various percutaneous tumor ablation modalities.","authors":"Seyed A Astani, Manuel L Brown, Kay Steusloff","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Microwave ablation, radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, and irreversible electroporation are percutaneous ablation modalities commonly employed to treat tumors. The procedure cost of treating the same lesion with each of the four modalities is compared. A cost model was created for each ablation modality estimating the cost of treating a tumor based on the number of probes required, which is estimated by the tumor size.Total cost of treating a 3 cm kidney lesion with each modality was individually calculated. There was a strongly positive and statistically significant relationship between estimated cost based on the cost modules and actual cost for all procedures. The number of required probes is the dominant factor in determining the cost of an ablation procedure. The most expensive ablation modalities in decreasing order are irreversible electroporation, cryoablation, and microwave and radiofrequency ablations.
","PeriodicalId":74636,"journal":{"name":"Radiology management","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32628249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
