Methods A single-center, cross-sectional, retrospective study was conducted. The study involved patients who underwent transurethral resection of the primary bladder tumor over a four-year period (May 2017–2021) and were subsequently diagnosed with a benign bladder lesion. Results Out of 478 patients who underwent transurethral resection of the primary bladder tumor, 26 (5.4%) were diagnosed with a benign bladder lesion. The most common benign bladder lesion was urothelial papilloma (50%, 13 patients). The majority of patients with urothelial papilloma were men (76.9%) and had a history of smoking (61.5%). The mean age was 62 years. Most were diagnosed accidentally (69.2%), while others presented with hematuria (23.1%) or dysuria (7.7%). Most urothelial papillomas had a macroscopic polypoid appearance (61.5%), and most of them were solitary (84.6%), with a mean size amounting to 1 cm. Only one patient experienced a recurrence and developed papillary urothelial neoplasm of low malignant potential (PUNLMP). Cystitis cystica/glandularis and polypoid cystitis were the second most commonly diagnosed benign bladder lesion, each identified in 3 patients. Singular cases of leiomyoma, inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, chondroma, paraganglioma, villous adenoma, eosinophilic cystitis (pseudotumor), and ectopic prostatic tissue are described. Conclusion Benign bladder lesions constitute a group of various rare entities that can clinically and radiologically mimic urothelial carcinoma, but mostly show a good prognosis and a low incidence of recurrence.","PeriodicalId":7432,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Urology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136341251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Primary renal Ewing sarcoma is rare and accounts for less than 1% of renal masses. Case presentation We present a case of a 45-year-old male presented in OPD with complaint of right flank pain and hematuria. He underwent a contrast-enhanced CT abdomen which depicted a right renal mass with liver lesions. He underwent Robotic Right Radical Nephrectomy and a pathological diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma was made after which he was started on chemotherapy. Conclusions Owing to presentation in younger age group with poor prognosis, an integrated analysis including radiological imaging, histopathology, and immune-histological staining is essential for early detection of renal Ewing sarcoma.","PeriodicalId":7432,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Urology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135307137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individuals with SCD experience lifelong complications; one such recurrent complication is priapism. Given the unfavorable prognosis and the limited knowledge of patients regarding priapism, healthcare professionals need to identify factors that can aid in diagnosing priapism in SCD patients. Main body of the abstract A comprehensive literature search was conducted using four databases, namely MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, following the PRISMA guidelines. The quality and risk of bias assessment were performed using the ROBINS-I tool (Risk Of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions) according to guidelines by the Cochrane Collaboration. The literature search yielded a total of 4434 studies, out of which six studies met the eligibility criteria. Short conclusions The findings from the selected studies revealed that advancing age and a higher frequency of priapism episodes were significant predictors of priapism occurrence in SCD patients. These findings underscore the importance of early recognition and management of priapism in this patient population.","PeriodicalId":7432,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Urology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134912034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods We retrospectively reviewed the records of all patients who were managed for renal pseudoaneurysm between January 2020 and December 2022. Data were collected from patient medical records and analyzed by using SPSS Statistics for Windows version 29.0. Data were expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD) or median for continuous variables, whereas frequency and percentage were used to express qualitative data. Demographic data, type of procedure, operative data, post-procedure data of patients, management type, i.e., conservative or angioembolization were recorded and POPVESL score of individual patients was calculated. Data analysis was conducted among subgroups based on management type, i.e., conservative vs angioembolization. ROC curves were utilized to find the threshold value for predicting the need of angioembolization. Results Out of 55, pseudoaneurysm develops after USG guided PCN in 4 individuals, i.e., 7.3%; renal biopsy in 11, i.e., 20% and PCNL in 40, i.e., 72.7%. On statistical analysis, hemoglobin drop, number of PCV transfused, size of vascular lesion and interval of readmission showed significant differences among subgroups and were predictive of the need for angioembolization. There was a significant difference in POPVESL score between both subgroups. POPVESL score 11 and above is 100% specific and 90% sensitive for angioembolization. Conclusion Renal pseudoaneurysm with a low POPVESL (i.e., < 11) score can be managed conservatively. This scoring system has the potential to help in making bedside decision for managing intrarenal vascular bleeding.","PeriodicalId":7432,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Urology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134912772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oxidative stress (OS) plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of male infertility. The purpose of this study comparatively evaluated the total anti-oxidation status and DNA/chromatin integrity in semen samples among different infertile men’s groups compared with the normozoospermic men. Methods This cross-sectional study contains four experimental groups, including teratozoospermia (Exp I), asthenoteratozoospermia (Exp II), oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (Exp III), and azoospermia (Exp IV), as well as the control group of normozoospermic men. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) were assessed by applying the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The chromatin/DNA damage was assessed in semen samples of all study groups by applying chromomycin A3 (CMA3) and toluidine blue (TB) staining methods. Results The results showed significantly higher proportions of TB+ and CMA3 positive sperm in all experimental groups compared to controls ( P < 0.001). TAC, TOS, and the ratio of TAC to TOS were significantly different in all experimental groups compared to the normozoospermic men ( P < 0.001). Conclusion Our study demonstrated that at least one sperm parameter abnormality, such as teratozoospermia could cause serious defects at the levels of DNA/chromatin as well as the antioxidants to oxidant balance of human spermatozoa in subfertile men with abnormal spermogram. Infertile men with sperm morphological abnormalities may benefit from simultaneous assessment of sperm DNA defects and OS.","PeriodicalId":7432,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Urology","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135742223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
