Up to 50% of patients with type 1 and 2 DM have the gastrointestinal manifestations, especially delayed gastric emptying (GE). And DM accounted for almost one-third of all cases of gastroparesis. The most common symptoms of DGP include postprandial fullness, early satiety, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain, which markedly lead to poor quality of life. Therapeutic strategies in western medicine for DGP involve dietary modification, the control of blood glucose, medications that stimulate gastric motor activity, anti-emetic and prokinetic drug therapy, and nonpharmacological measures. However, the limited effectiveness and the side effects of the strategies above mentioned may be restricted for their applications sometimes. Complementary and alternative therapy like Chinese herbs, acupuncture, moxibustion, and massage has been widely used for thousands of years and there are an increasing number of studies in DGP about them, suggesting that Chinese medicine could bring multiple benefits in the treatment of refractory nausea and vomiting and also help to alleviate abdominal distension with fewer side effects. Here, we focus on the general treatment strategies of complementary and alternative therapy, as discovered through PubMed and CNKI in English and Chinese publications, respectively.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/lcm.2019.11.01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47738791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The immune checkpoint therapies have shown great promise in this setting, by potentiating the body’s natural immune response against tumor cells. Checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) have definitively consolidated the target of reversing the immunoevasion as one of the most universal strategies to change the natural evolution of advanced oncological diseases, and to maximize CPI treatment efficacy, synergies in immune system modulation must be seriously considered. In the field of Integrative Oncology, Chinese medicinal mushrooms have been increasingly promoted as excellent anticancer immunoenhancers. However, many plants of traditional Chinese medicine have been less visible, but—as scientific literature reveals—not less powerful as antitumor immunomodulators. Astragalus membranaceous root is a venerated plant as a tonic in traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia. This is known to be beneficial to relieve mild disorders and to help in more serious diseases, such as cancer. For this great restorative capacity was why it won the name of Huang Qi, “leader of all tonics”, or Yellow Leader, because of its colour. Astragalus root contains a variety of immunoactive constituents. Its power as an antitumor root is not only due to its immunomodulatory activity; it is able to modulate several apoptotic and antiangiogenic signaling pathways and interact with specific transcription molecules. We propose a rational model of the combination of CPI with Astragalus root chosen as representative of traditional immunotherapy, to set a paradigmatic frame to develop novel target-specific combinations with natural immunomodulators. We are convinced that by combining these two strategies in immunotherapy—the new one and the old one—we can definitely overcome immune cell exhaustion, boost the response to immunocheckpoint treatment, and minimize side effects, to get better and more efficient results in cancer immunotherapy.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-10-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/LCM.2019.05.01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47032009","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, studies have found that intestinal microecology has undergone significant changes in psoriasis. Due to the regulatory effect of intestinal microecology on the immune system, disordered intestinal microecology plays an important role in the occurrence and development of psoriasis. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that spleen deficiency is an important basis of intestinal microecological disorder. The process and symptoms of psoriasis with spleen deficiency are more prolonged and difficult to recover, which are easy to recurrence. Improving the spleen deficiency can adjust the quantity and variety of intestinal flora and its metabolites, so as to alleviate the symptoms and improve the prognosis of psoriasis.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/lcm.2019.09.02","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43756151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These changes have significantly impacted outcomes in treatment recommendations, including many non-pharmacological therapies, notably acupuncture. This review presents what has changed on acupuncture recommendations for the treatment of fibromyalgia after alterations performed by ACR classification criteria. A literature search was performed to identify published studies between January 01, 2008 and June 30, 2018. Published studies were identified using an initial search of PubMed database. We searched for trials published using the terms “fibromyalgia acupuncture”. We used only full-text articles available online and related to the objective of this review. The last ACR’s criteria [2010] have included the evaluation of other symptoms of fibromyalgia besides pain. New diagnostic and therapeutic technologies have also enabled the publishing of new trials, scientifically demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture in patients with the fibromyalgia syndrome. It is concluded that acupuncture is currently considered a scientifically recommended treatment for fibromyalgia.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.21037/LCM.2019.08.01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48548749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
