Lamponi","doi":"10.21037/lcm-21-23","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21037/lcm-21-23","url":null,"abstract":"Coronavirus disease, i.e., COVID-19, is caused by the virus called “severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)”. Infection induces predominantly respiratory illness but is also associated with coagulation disorders which play an important role in the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and outcome of the disease. The treatment of hemostasis disorders of COVID-19 patients is a difficult problem to solve. For example, heparin is quite effective drug in reducing mortality in severe COVID-19 forms but not able to prevent venous and arterial thromboembolic complications. Moreover, anticoagulant therapy with heparin is associated with several adverse reactions, such as thrombocytopenia, osteoporosis, hypoaldosteronism and hypersensitivity reactions. New alternative anticoagulant molecules can be obtained from plants which are rich in polyphenols and flavonoids. These compounds, besides being potent antioxidants, also possess anti-inflammatory effect and, because able to inhibit the activity of many enzymes, including serine proteases, also anticoagulant properties. The purpose of this narrative review is to provide an overview of current literature data on coagulation disorders associated with COVID-19 disease and of the anticoagulant activity of plants and their extracts in order to evaluate their possible clinical application as alternative sources of novel molecules with anticoagulant and antithrombotic activity for the treatment of coagulation disorders in patients with COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42062436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nanonization technology provides a platform for the development of molecular medicine such as detection and treatment of illnesses, body part replacement, regenerative medicine, nanoscale surgery, and targeted delivery of drugs. Nano Chinese medicine delivery system plays a significant role in the drug formulations, targeting area, and controlled its drug release. These can be utilized as delivery agents by encapsulating drugs, attaching therapeutic drugs, and delivering the drug to target tissues. Some of the bioactive natural compounds in traditional Chinese medicine such as celastrol have been incorporated with nanoparticles for curing diseases through enhancing bioavailability, targeting, and controlling its release, resulting in better therapeutic effects regarding the use of nanomaterials in drug delivery. There are several nanosystems for celastrol that have been reported also discussed the mechanism, and the toxicity of several types of celastrol nanoparticles. Its nano-system helps to increase solubility and stability, avoid toxicity, enhance pharmacological activity, improve tissue distribution, sustain delivery, and protect from physical or chemical degradation. Folic acid is the most common cancer targeting agent. This is water-soluble and delivers celastrol selectively to cancer cells only. Thus, nanotechnology of traditional Chinese medicine is attracting scientists’ attention.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44265335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Background: GCA is the most common primary vasculitis in the elderly and can cause bilateral irreversible blindness, aortitis, stroke and rarely death. The incidence of GCA in China is thought to be low, but has not been formally examined. Methods: A narrative review of the English language publications concerning GCA in China was performed on the PubMed and Google Scholar databases from inception to May 30, 2021. Conclusions: Five case series of GCA patients in China from Beijing, Changsha and Hong Kong showed the average number of GCA patients at the different hospitals varied from 1.7 to 9.6 patients per year. A retracted, outlier study from Lanzhou, China reported up to 336 patients per year. Latitude, smoking prevalence, percentage of Han Chinese ancestry, and average life expectancy in each city did not seem to influence the number of GCA patients. Excluding the outlier study, the incidence of GCA in China remains low. Overlap in the diagnosis of GCA with Takayasu arteritis may account for reports of higher relative incidence. To determine accurate incidence rates for GCA in China future studies require an accurate age-appropriate population denominator.","PeriodicalId":74086,"journal":{"name":"Longhua Chinese medicine","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43974355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
