Drawing on literature highlighting the importance of recognition, learning, and understanding in journalism, we developed this eight-item scale by utilizing findings from qualitative research exploring the gaps between news media and audiences. Using a three-wave panel survey across the United Kingdom (n = 1248) and Brazil (n = 1998), we find that people who score higher on the \"News is Not Made for Me\" scale tend to be younger, have greater attention problems, lower socioeconomic backgrounds, express lower news self-efficacy, and have greater interest in soft news. We also find that people who believe news is not made for them tend to avoid news more often (despite also reporting higher levels of news consumption), score lower on current affairs knowledge, and score higher on belief in misinformation. Οverall, people who believe the news is not made for them are reaping far fewer benefits from news, despite consuming more of it than their counterparts. One such trajectory, transitioning from news industry to higher education, remains relatively underexplored. This study employed semi-structured interviews with 15 Chinese journalists to investigate this career shift. Our interviews revealed three patterns of transition: (a) a full shift to higher education, (b) dual engagement in both domains, and (c) assuming senior academic positions through interchangeable professional titles across the two domains. Additionally, this study applied push-pull model to identify factors driving journalists to leave news industry, including transformations in the broader media environment, institutional constraints, and personal value vacuum. In contrast, the motivations for entering higher education often stem from the desire to systematize knowledge and uphold journalistic ideals, making this transition not simply a career change but an extension of core journalistic values. Moreover, this study enriched the push-pull model by incorporating the adaptation challenges encountered during the transition, particularly concerning professional identity and practices. Through a critical discourse analysis of qualitative interviews with eight Muslim female journalists, this research elucidates their experiences with a gendered-religious nuance considering the specificities of gendered Islamophobia. It further moves past the established discourse of racialized women in media facing burdens of representation to examine how they unite their lived experience as Muslim women with journalism epistemology to challenge gendered Islamophobic discourses and unite Islamic values with journalistic practice. Drawing on theoretical frameworks like critical race theory and Orientalism, this research ultimately finds that the women challenge dominant discourses of objectivity in journalism and Islamophobic discourses surrounding Muslim women. This paper attempts both. From a scientific perspective, we examined the process of the digitalization of journalism and then asked journalists from different generations to reflect on this process. Based on data gathered from these semi-structured interviews with German journalists, our paper presents their evaluation on the evolution from analog to digital journalism—from retired male reporters who wrote most of their articles on typewriters to young female data journalists. The interviews with journalists—including local newspaper reporters, public broadcasting services and news magazines’ editors, freelancers and former German Democratic Republic (GDR) journalists—are part of a larger funded research project on German journalism. Their analysis reveals a common problematization of the growing pace of news production and the hybridization of media formats. Some emotional management strategies can lead journalists to self-censorship or to mental health problems when they do not recognise and deal with emotions. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate how journalists react to hostility against them by using emotional coping strategies and emotional management. We carried out 18 semi-structured interviews with news journalists in Estonia from June 2021 to December 2021. The results showed that although hostility is a part of journalists’ everyday work-life, many lack a strategy to deal with it. We can say that there are three types of perceptions and reactions: (1) the thick-skinned journalist who does not see problems with hostility and, therefore, does not take any action against receiving the hostility. (2) The pragmatically conformist journalist who sometimes sees problems with hostility and believes the solution is to grow a thicker skin.
