Exploiting the sensitivity of infrared (IR) spectra to the conformation, we have determined the reaction kinetic parameters of the conductive intermediate M for the wild-type protein and for its slow mutant D96N during its photocycle. Time-resolved IR micro-spectroscopy using an in-house developed confocal laser microscope operating in the mid-IR is employed to record absorption changes of 10−4 at wavelengths λ1 = 6.08 μm and λ2 = 6.35 μm, assigned to backbone and retinal structural modifications, respectively. Protein samples were embedded in dried lipid bilayers deposited on ultraflat gold supports to enhance the surface field. The signals were analyzed according to a simplified photocycle model with only two dominant states: the dark-adapted state BR* and the intermediate M. We obtained the excitation and relaxation times of the intermediate M from exponential fits to the absorption change time traces. Our results constitute a first step towards future plasmonic-assisted nanoscale time-resolved mid-IR spectrometers for the characterization of bioelectronic and light-harvesting nanodevices based on BR.","PeriodicalId":73099,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in photonics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47207440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

State-of-the-art up-conversion techniques rely on the coherent transferring of the information encoded in all degrees of freedom of a terahertz wave to either the near-infrared or visible domain, where detectors are readily accessible. This allows for an indirect reconstruction of the terahertz wave. However, unlike most up-conversion methods employed in photonics which are concentrating on narrowband tones (at both terahertz and near-infrared frequencies), a broadband, hence temporally constrained, terahertz transient is sampled on time-scales shorter than its oscillation period. Here, femtosecond laser pules serve as temporal gates. In this perspective, we highlight several hallmarks of terahertz metrology that originate from these sub-cycle measurement capabilities and elaborate why this enables studies in fundamental and applied science, with a particular focus on novel measurement concepts in classical and quantum. We focus on so-far demonstrated detection performance in bulk non-linear crystals. Finally, we discuss current challenges and the most pressing questions ahead.","PeriodicalId":73099,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in photonics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48233204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent reports show sub-THz links offering capacities of hundreds of Gbit/s, finally approaching those of state-of-the-art optical transmission channels. Non-etheless, generation, transport, detection and processing of signals in the THz range is far from being a trivial task. Even though the recent evolution of integrated technology is starting to indicate that chip-scale THz technology could gradually close the so-called “THz gap,” much work still needs to be done to enable functional systems, in particular in terms of efficiency. Photonics can be of help, thanks to its extremely low loss and broad bandwidth. Yet, a particularly critical aspect hindering the deployment of THz technology is that state-of-the-art photonics devices generally do not offer sufficient electro-optical bandwidth to process THz signals. Plasmonics, by focusing electromagnetic surface waves at sub-wavelength scales, can play a key role in this quest, as it finally enables the realization of electro-optical devices such as modulators and detectors displaying sufficient compactness and speeds to reach the THz range. This paper overviews recent achievements on plasmonic-based modulators displaying characteristics of speed, efficiency and linearity that enable high-performance access to this much desired frequency range.","PeriodicalId":73099,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in photonics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48068853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is modeled by semi-classical Maxwell–Bloch rate equations with stochastic Langevin-type noise sources. Our results reveal that a polarization dephasing time of two to three times the cavity photon lifetime maximizes the system’s ability to remain phase-locked in the presence of noise-induced perturbations. The Langevin noise term is caused by spontaneous emission processes which change both the intensity auto-correlation properties of the solitary lasers and the coupled system. In an experimental setup, these quantities are measurable and can be directly compared to our numerical data. The strong parameter dependence of the noise tolerance that we find may show possible routes for the design of robust on-chip integrated networks of nanolasers.","PeriodicalId":73099,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in photonics","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41405837","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show that coupling dispersion can indeed compensate for the uncoupled individual waveguides dispersion enabling a substantial tailoring of the gain spectrum. Our theory describes both phase-sensitive and phase-insensitive operational modes, it can be straightforwardly generalized to include arbitrary higher-order waveguide and coupling dispersion and its predictions agree very well with numerical simulations both in the presence and in the absence of waveguide losses. It provides a tool for the design of novel versatile parametric amplifiers based both on coupled integrated waveguides and dual-core fibers too.","PeriodicalId":73099,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in photonics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48072677","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Continuous wave generation of picosecond pulses at a rate of 100 GHz is demonstrated by recording microwave intensity noises, beat frequency, time-resolved optical spectra, and intensity autocorrelation. Coherence of the pulse train is obtained through the frequency noise measurement of the demodulated beat note, demonstrating a timing jitter as low as 110 fs, near the quantum limit. Using a theoretical model based on a generalized Haus master equation, we demonstrate the existence of this mode locked state without the need for saturable absorption. The fundamental physical mechanism is the interplay between self-phase modulation and anomalous dispersion like in cavity soliton together with light–matter interaction-induced time symmetry breaking.","PeriodicalId":73099,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in photonics","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46503271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A variety of imaging modalities and sensing approaches have been developed and are in use in clinics, alone or in combination, including fluorescence, reflectance spectroscopy, ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography. Physicians have been interested in shining light inside the body for examination since ancient times. Advances in optics, detectors, and light sources enabled modern endoscopy, which is now part of everyday clinical practice. Advances in the miniaturization of optical instruments are enabling ever greater access to probing narrow and tortuous deep-tissue structures. These advances contributed to the growth in our understanding of human anatomy, as well as physiological and pathological processes occurring within the body. Ultimately, clinical translation of intraluminal imaging and optical sensing aim to support more accurate diagnosis and drive the growth of personalized medicine. This Research Topic comprises four articles that provide insight into the state of the art of intraluminal imaging and sensing systems. Special emphasis is given to the use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to image the vascular system. While OCT was first adopted by the ophthalmologic field in the 1990s, it is now gaining traction as an alternative or complementary method to ultrasound to visualize luminal structures, such as the cardiovascular system. It provides high-resolution images with enough depth to visualize vessel morphology and wall pathology with fine detail. Furthermore, highspeed imaging enables the quantification of dynamic processes, such as vessel contractility, that could be of great clinical significance to track changes in the cardiac cycle. Anagnostakou et al. present New frontiers in intracranial imaging with HF-OCT: Ex vivo human cerebrovasculature evaluation and in vivo intracranial arteries dynamic visualization, where they describe a novel high-frequency optical coherence tomography (HF-OCT) system that has successfully reached the most distal parts of the anterior and posterior cranial vasculature.
