This source of lightning-fatality data is provided by the Colombian National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) and it has been preferred over other data collection methods because the information is obtained from a governmental free database that can be consulted by anyone with internet access. In addition, the relationship between the date, location of the event and some sociodemographic information of the victim, such as the gender and the occupation, are presented. Finally, the data set is also analyzed in order to establish a relation between the geographic distribution of the fatalities (location) and rainfall, where April-May and September-October are the two seasons with the highest rainfall, in which the most of the deaths by lightning has been reported for the 11-year period. The five wave characteristics were Rise Time (RT), Pulse Duration (PD), Slow Front Duration (SFD), Zero Crossing Time (ZCT) and Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM). As the first step normality check was done for the data collected under the five variables which resulted in non-normal distribution in all five variables. Thereafter, the result of Mann-Whitney test proved that there is a significant distributional difference in PNBP and NNBP with respect to the five wave characteristics. Furthermore, they were used to fit a binary logistic regression model in order to model the odds of the occurrence of PNBP with respect to the significant variables identified in the Mann-Whitney test. This resulted RT, PD, SFD and ZCT to significantly explain the variability the response variable while FWHM did not significantly explained the same. In addition to that the overall fitted model was able to successfully explain 90.3% of the variability of the response variable. It frequently occurs, at a rate of 44 strikes every second, and it can cause severe damages to properties and endanger human lives either by death or permanent injuries. In Malaysia, lightning activities are one of the highest globally, and they have caused severe economic losses and human casualties. To avoid being struck by lightning, seeking shelter inside buildings is the standard action. However, there are doubts about how prepared buildings are to minimise the risk of human injuries and fatalities. In this project, lightning risk assessment and surveying of the existing Lightning Protection Level (LPL) of 22 buildings of different purposes in Cyberjaya, Malaysia were carried out. With the aid of the Malaysian lightning protection standards, MS IEC 62305, the risk of loss of human life (R1) due to direct strikes to buildings was calculated. In order to perform risk assessment, data were collected from different sources and using different methods including CAD drawings, physical inspections, direct measurements, interviews and inquiries from the management, and relevant online sources and publications. It was found that only less than half of the sampled buildings have adequate protection to minimise the risk of loss of human life. This paper discusses distribution network modeling techniques required for lightning studies. The presented models of lightning current, line conductors, line insulators, distribution poles, grounding, distribution transformers, and surge arresters have been used for a direct lightning simulation case study. The case study is done in an eight kilometers long rural mini-grid of Nepal, where seven synchronous generators and seven distribution transformers are closely located. From this study, the dead-end low-voltage side and the midway medium-voltage side were found to be most stressed. So, it is recommended to use appropriate arresters at the low-voltage side of dead-end distribution transformers specifically to protect generators and low-voltage consumer appliances. Bentonite is very well known and word-wide acceptable clay which can be used to make the better interface between the soil and electrode, and hence total soil resistivity can be reduced. The resistivity of bentonite is highly moisture dependent which makes the clay insignificant in dry areas or the areas where resistivity of the soil is very high as per the literature and our experimental analysis. The issues associated with only clay could be solved with the addition of carbon particles in the clay, although that could not solve the issue of leachability completely. Therefore, an environment friendly chemical polymer entitled ‘link-X’ was added in the mix in order to maintain a reservoir in the soil along with the conductive components. The link-X can be used to make only carbon-based as well as bentonite-based earth enhancement compound. In this case study, the subject building was periodically observed for new bypasses, from the time it was completed and installed with just one ESE air terminal to the time after two additional ESE air terminals and Franklin rods were added a few years later. The continued occurrences of bypasses provide clear evidence that the use of multiple ESE air terminals cannot protect a building from being struck by lightning. Recently developed non-equilibrium arc model was applied for analysis of fault current interruption in rarefied air conditions. Results of switching arc simulation showed that for lower pressure conductance decays slower and thus the interruption is less effective. Firstly, the theories of the Weibull distribution and median rank regression (MRR) method are introduced. Then the procedure to evaluate the three parameters of the Weibull cumulative distribution function (CDF) is provided through a life-test experiment with the random-selected MOV samples. Three widely used lightning attachment models in TL performance studies are implemented, namely: i) electrogeometric model (EGM) considering the constants suggest in the IEEE Std. 1243; ii) the attractive width approach proposed by Eriksson; and iii) the average attractive width, suggested by IEEE and CIGRE guidelines for estimating the lightning incidence to TL shielding wires and implemented in the IEEE FLASH program. Also, two different peak current distributions are analyzed, namely the classical Berger's distribution and another one representative of tropical regions. It is shown that using the concept of average attractive width leads to an overestimation of the lightning incidence to the shield wires of around 50%, taking as reference Berger's distribution. The EGM and attractive width approaches agrees fairly well in predicting the annual number of strokes to TLs.
