The first five were in small children who had eaten varying amounts of a cake-crumb roach killer containing thallium. * During this period there were approximately 40 reported cases of thallium poisoning in small children in Corpus Christi from the same preparation. Legal action was taken by the County Medical Society to force the manufacturers of the roach killer to include a bitter-tasting substance to make the cake-crumb preparation less attractive to children. Since this has been done, I have seen only two cases of thallium alopecia in children. I have, however, observed six cases of slight to almost complete diffuse alopecia in women. The diagnosis was proved in all cases by spectroscopic examination of the patient's urine for thallium. A newcomer among the vesicular and bullous diseases of the skin is subcorneal pustular dermatosis, first described by Sneddon and Wilkinson 1 in 1955 and introduced to the American literature by Greenbaum and Lee in 1958. 2 Additional cases have been added by Ellis 3 and Shoenfeld, 4 the former writer presenting an extensive review of the literature. Sneddon and Wilkinson pointed out that this disease complex presents a number of characteristic features which distinguish it from dermatitis herpetiformis, impetigo herpetiformis, pemphigus, and impetigo contagiosa. There has been no dearth of work on the part of dermatologists toward attempting to solve the mystery of this disease. In a 10-year period, from 1948-1957, Sulzberger and Baer 1 and Baer and Whitten 2 summarized 86 investigative studies on psoriasis. The great majority of this work has been directed toward methods of therapy and the study of chemical alterations. A summary of the literature of investigative work on psoriasis is to be found in Shelley and Arthur's review. 3 Recently Flesch and Esoda 4,5 reported their studies of the physical and chemical properties of the scales of psoriasis.
