There are different types of medium access control (MAC) protocols that are designed for implantable body sensor networks, using different physical layer technologies such as narrow band, ultra wide-band, human body communication, and ultrasound with an innovative low power access technology called wake-up radio (WuR). The WuR operates alongside the main radio either in the same frequency or different frequency, with much lower power and reduced hardware components than main radio. In this article we analyze the impact of WuR on commonly used MAC protocols and evaluate three MAC protocols with WuR using real hardware implanted in animal tissue and compare them with three other MAC protocols without WuR. The hardware implantable board is embedded with a micro-processor, wireless communication unit and is subcutaneously implanted under the skin of the animal tissue. Five nodes with one of them being the central controller connected in star topology are used for evaluation. Energy efficiency, reliability in terms of packet loss ratio, and end-to-end delay for each node are considered as the evaluation criteria.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"18 1","pages":"88-92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89341440","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the field of health monitoring systems, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) is one of the key technologies and its standardization activities have also been extensively carried out. As our previous work, we proposed an optimal QoS control scheme employing a multiplexing layer and a decomposable error control coding scheme [1]. However, in our past work, we did not assume a situation where several WBANs are coexistent and give interference each other. Besides, the error correction capacity of our decomposable code was not sufficient. In this paper, we improve dependability of our scheme by extending code rates of the decomposable code. We also evaluate the performances comparing with IEEE 802.15.6 in a multiple WBAN environment by computer simulations.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"98 1 1","pages":"83-87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78164969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The key features of the protocol are a two-channel concept with different channels for data and control traffic, and a unique Multi-use Channel Access as one alternative channel access mode. The two-channel concept provides fast channel acquisition and easy Hub to Hub communications. Multi-use Channel Access guarantees for very-low latency emergency messaging for time-critical applications. In addition, Re-use Access mode of the Multi-use Channel Access enables the utilization of the scheduled but unused time slots thus increasing the channel utilization. The protocol is mainly a joint work between Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at the University of Oulu and Toshiba Research Europe Ltd.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"19 1","pages":"10-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74212078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Received signal strength indication (RSSI) was recorded on the memory of the receiver and retrieved afterward. Transmission from chest to wrist was measured, assuming a transmission of ECG signal from chest to a wearable device worn on the wrist. RSSI values were compared for different contact conditions. The largest signal was obtained when the signal electrode of the receiver was in contact with the human body and the ground electrode was floating.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"13 1","pages":"45-48"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75362486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wireless body area network (WBAN) applications for health-care systems are rapidly being developed and deployed. In an unlicensed frequency band like industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band, WBANs will encounter tough competition for resources because several other wireless technologies share the band. Spectrum occupancy evaluations (SOEs) provide a statistical insight into the resource utilization patterns. This research work is focused on stochastic modeling of such spectrum occupancies in order to statistically describe the possible interference a WBAN may face. Modeling is based upon the measurement data acquired from accident and emergency ward, Oulu University hospital. Stochastic models for channel occupancies and spectrum resource occupancy are provided. The consistency of model produced data with actual data is validated through exact and asymptotic statistical hypothesis tests.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"18 1","pages":"157-161"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85698296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of its vital challenges is that dynamic channels suffer severely from fading. Therefore the characterization of WBAN channel is important and many researches have been done in this area. This paper presents a tri-polarized dynamic WBAN channel sounder to realize 3×3 dynamic channel measurement by applying time division multiplexing (TDM), and by using two tri-polarized dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) and a multi-port oscilloscope. Due to the tri-polarized property of DRA, this present system can contribute to the antenna polarization dependency of WBAN channel as well as the measurement-based antenna de-embedding. In this paper, system configuration, parameter design, DRA antenna, calibration method, and measurement validation are presented.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"8 1","pages":"30-34"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84453273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This proposed method can identify the human movement in WBAN using only the radio signal strength, thus any additional tools are not necessary. OpenNICTA provides the BAN measurement channel in three kinds of human motions, which are running, walking and standing. This paper used three sets of the measurement data, which Tx-Rx located at Back-Chest, RightAnkle-Chest, and RightWrist-Chest. Each data set was separately used to identify the movements. This paper used two types of machine learning, which are neural network and decision tree. In the neural network, it has been found that using eight types of features, which are SCP, Range, SSI, RMS, LCR, SC, WAMP, Histogram, calculated from 200 continuous received signal levels can identify the human movements with accuracy rate of 90.41-98.83 percent. Using the same features, the decision tree can identify the human movements with the accuracy rate of 99.04-99.66 percent. Both tools perform well on the human movement identification. However, the decision tree outperforms the neural network in this task.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"8 1","pages":"59-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87432987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A primal objective is to achieve the enhancement of signal power, not only in downlink but also in uplink dynamic channels, between an access point mounted on the wrist and a sensor module attached to various locations on a human body. The proposed antenna is comprised of two orthogonal antennas, which can obtain the optimum transmitting and receiving signals in considerations of the cross polarization power ratio (XPR) and antenna tilt angle. A dynamic channel model to represent the geometrical relationship between two locations considering arm-swinging motion was proposed. Based on the model, a weight function was derived to control an orthogonal active antenna in an adaptive way for increasing the radiation pattern in the direction of a desired signal. Furthermore, a preliminary experiment using a 2-element polarization-controlled active antenna based on the proposed weight function has been carried out in an anechoic chamber. The results show that a high level of the received signal power can be obtained regardless of the arm-swing angle and antenna placement both in the measured data and analytical results, confirming the effectiveness of the proposed method to enhance the BAN on-body radio links has been confirmed.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"31 1","pages":"117-120"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80864276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, recently developed medical devices are also used for equipped WiFi function to communicate between the server and client for convenience. Therefore, the electromagnetic field environment in the hospitals is getting complex and unstable. The electromagnetic interference and susceptibility of the medical equipment are very important because it is related to the patient life in the hospitals. So, the international standard committees are suggested and managed the electromagnetic field problems. Although nations in the world are agreed and introduced the standard of electromagnetic fields, the interference between the devices is still occurred. Especially, devices that are closed to each other could be easily affected. In addition, the electromagnetic problems of medical devices are very important and should be completely managed because it could be affected to human being. The electromagnetic fields of extremely low frequency bands are not exactly effect to the human body, but the world health organization and the international agency for research on cancer reported that the extremely low frequency and radio frequency bands are possibly carcinogenic to humans for cancer occurrence. Therefore, the hospital manager should be assessed the electromagnetic environment radiated by the medical devices or telecommunication and prepared the method of safe management. In addition, they should be prepared to avoid the electromagnetic interference and susceptibility between the medical devices or other electrical devices. The electromagnetic radiation according to the medical devices in the hospitals has to be measured and analyzed. The measured results of electromagnetic field strengths radiated by the medical devices in the hospitals are not very strong except some high power used devices such as the electrosurgical units. However, if there are the interfering devices near by the medical equipment, interference could be occurred during working of medical equipment in the hospitals.","PeriodicalId":6624,"journal":{"name":"2015 9th International Symposium on Medical Information and Communication Technology (ISMICT)","volume":"44 1","pages":"56-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76918720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
