{"title":"The Corset and the Hijab. Absence and presence in the 19th and 20th-century Fashion System","authors":"Marília Jardim","doi":"10.25965/AS.6415","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.25965/AS.6415","url":null,"abstract":"Introduction The corset and the hijab : more than emblems of two societies and cultures, those two objects could perhaps be classed as being among the most evocative items of dress produced by two traditions often addressed as opposed : English and Egyptian cultures. Placing both objects and the two selected locations in parallel may seem, for some, a comparison not possible and, hence, surpassing the possibilities of the semiotic theory ; however, looking closer at both objects, not only they produce similar trajectories in time, but similar values are invested in, and manifested through them, as we hope to show. As much as England is an epicentre of Western culture and remains a dictator of Fashion trends and a centre for the qualification of designers, Egypt, as well, is a pivot of cultural and political life in the Arab world. Similarly, while the British cling to their glorious monarchical, colonialist history, Egyptians are tied to their Pharaonic past likewise, pulled in opposing directions, also being at the forefront of the proximity with both the Arab and Western worlds1. By presenting Egypt as a country similar to England in history and cultural influence, both nations can be placed side by side at least as a corpus to analyse the trajectories of feminine dress, while also serving to fulfil Edward Said’s celebrated statement about the West and the Orient being, contrary to the prevalent discourses, reversed reflections of one another2. Both sartorial objects, traditionally and normatively worn by the woman, share more with each other than being part of the feminine wardrobe. Although it is not customary, in Fashion theory, to talk about “Fashion” as something existing outside of Western culture, this reflection aims at the argument that the transit of values that forms the rhythmic changes in Fashion systems is also shared by corset and hijab and, consequently, by the cultures producing those objects. “Fashion is defined by change” is probably one of the most succinct illustrations of a Western obsession since the 18th century : Fashion is a mode of existence marked by correlational hierarchies — a system — which governs the alternation of different appearances periodically, through processes of erasure and renovation. Hence, the Fashion system is marked by the punctual aspect : the attempt to prolong the duration of a vogue is precisely the signature of the kitsch, the demodé, or what stayed outside of the loop of change, choosing persistence over renewal.","PeriodicalId":64325,"journal":{"name":"新作文(小学123年级)","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72937381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L’identité entre éco-anthropologie et sémiopoiétique Ballottée entre « identités nationales » et « politiques identitaires », entre des identités individuelles exacerbées et des affirmations identitaires visant l’exclusion, la notion d’identité, non sans raison, a désormais mauvaise réputation. C’est le cas en particulier chez les anthropologues. Parmi eux, Francesco Remotti, depuis Contro l’identità (1996) jusqu’à L’ossessione identitaria (2010), s’est montré particulièrement critique1. Tout d’abord contre une identité qui se révèle à ses yeux être un masque, sinon une fiction visant à cacher la précarité d’un « je » qui se gonfle en un « nous » à son tour très précaire ; contre une identité plurielle aussi, qui, se configurant comme une « illusion », ne peut s’affirmer que face à une altérité tout aussi fictionnelle. Puis face à une modernité entraînée par un processus généralisé de « déculturation » au profit d’un monde asservi au marché et à la consommation de biens matériels : constat d’un monde pauvre en « relations et projets de coexistence ». Tout cela incline à se passer du concept d’identité « avec ses mythes, aussi misérables qu’ils sont stupides »2. Néanmoins, l’existence même du corps propre, avec notamment ses dispositions génétiques et ses capacités neuronales, oblige à reconnaître pour toute personne une identité in-dividuelle : en-deçà de toute essentialisation philosophique du « sujet » et au-delà de la dialectique ricœurienne entre l’idem et l’ipse (sur laquelle on va revenir), l’identité, à nos yeux, se construit et se modifie de manière constitutivement « anthropo-poiétique », c’est-à-dire dans une fabrication interactionnelle et culturelle de l’être humain avec ses proches, en particulier par la communication langagière, qui à l’évidence relève d’une sémiotique. Mais, fondée sur le corps propre et l’organe cérébral qui l’anime, l’individu, avec son identité sociale et culturelle, se constitue aussi de manière « éco-poiétique », dans l’interaction avec un monde environnant dont il partage les qualités physiques, chimiques et biologiques et dont il ne cesse d’interpréter, également de manière sémiotique, la matérialité afin d’en user — quand il n’en abuse pas. Complexe et fluide, l’identité de chaque individu se fait et se défait dans l’interaction avec des ensembles socio-culturels multiformes et avec un environnement physique et biologique qu’il rend signifiant. S’il est juste de dénoncer les identités, singulières ou collectives, qui s’affirmeraient dans une prétendue pureté du même en opposition à d’autres, sinon aux autres, s’il est légitime de les interroger comme fictions et d’en dénoncer l’extrême précarité de fait, s’il est indispensable d’éviter d’en faire des","PeriodicalId":64325,"journal":{"name":"新作文(小学123年级)","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77119711","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
