Novel distributed uniform and multi-rate storage management approaches are proposed and through proper modeling of the stochastic disconnectivity patterns, network heterogeneity degrees, data resolution thresholds and various network design parameters, this work shows how these techniques can improve the overall network performance. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the performance of MCMC detectors. We study the impact of several parameters such as the list size and the number of independently running chains. As a performance criterion, our analysis is based on the mutual information over an equivalent modulation channel, rather than on coded bit error rates, because this metric is independent of the outer channel code and provides valuable insights over the whole SNR range of interest. By conducting goodness of fit tests, we define the range of values of the scintillation index, where the two distributions approximate each other, with a certain significance level. The efficiency of the new model is pointed out by deriving analytical expressions for the calculation of the bit-error rate of two typical FSO systems; an intensity-modulation/direct detection FSO system with M-ary pulse position modulation and a heterodyne FSO system with differential phase shift keying. In such a Time-Wavelength-Switched- Network (TWSN), the Time-Wavelength-Space-Routers (TWSRs) are configured to change their routing pattern on a time slot basis. Another kind of time slotted network proposed in the literature is the Time-Wavelength-Interleaved Network (TWIN), which eliminates time switching within the network by using a non-reconfigurable core and an intelligent edge utilizing a fast tunable laser to emulate fast switching. A drawback of the TWIN network is that it assigns a unique wavelength to each node in the network. Thus it requires a total of W = N wavelengths for an N-node network and hence is not scalable. In this paper we propose to design a wavelength-constrained (i.e., W < N) TWIN network with no switching (TWIN-NS) by using a multicasting strategy. We also propose a variant of the TWIN network which possesses switching capabilities only at the edge nodes (TWIN-ES), and compare the performances of these TWIN networks to that of the TWSN. Aiming at multiuser sum capacity maximization, we first propose an iterative optimization algorithm which exploits quadratic programming approaches. We observe that the iterative method always yields the optimized precoding matrices which diagonalize the compound channel of the system at high SNR regimes. Inspired by this observation, we further develop an efficient source and relay precoding strategy by diagonalizing the compound channel of the backward (source-to- relay) and the forward (relay-to-destination) links. There are a number of semi-analytical approaches for BICM performance analysis, all of which have limitations in terms of applicability and/or complexity. In this paper, we present a novel analytical approach to approximate the bit error rate (BER) of BICM. Our approach is unified in the sense that a (i) large class of fading channels, (ii) arbitrary labeling rules, and (iii) all common signal constellations are encompassed, and it is preferable over previous work in that we provide closed-form expressions. We also derive expressions for the asymptotic BER, which reveals the diversity order and coding gain of BICM transmission over fading channels. Given the widespread deployment of OFDM modulation in recent and future multimedia broadcasting and wireless broad-band services, reliable spectrum sensing of OFDM waveforms is of great interest for future cognitive radio systems. This paper presents a new detection method for OFDM waveforms that exploits the available embedded pilot tones without any simplifying assumption or constraints on the pilots. Analytical performance characterization is presented and supported by simulation results for both AWGN and fading channels. To avoid extensive information exchange with the access point in centralized approaches, we propose a distributed threshold-based scheme, where each user accesses multiple channels simultaneously based on a comparison between measured channel gains and a channel gain threshold. Each user will adapts its channel gain threshold based on local measurements of collision on each channeland the energy consumption for channel contention. The problem is formulated as a constrained non-cooperative game. We show existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium. A gradient-based algorithm is proposed to update the channel gain threshold. Furthermore, the convergence of this algorithm is proved. In addition, for heterogeneous systems, our proposed scheme can maintain multiuser diversity gains considering the time-varying channel gain and energy consumption. By dynamically notching the occupied bands prior to applying IDFT, the designed cognitive radio communicates without interference to primary users and from primary users, as well as provides coexistence between primary users and secondary users. The designed system applies GNU software radio as the platform, and USRP (Universal Software Radio Peripheral) as the hardware solution. This cognitive radio is capable of detecting primary users in real time and adaptively adjusting its transmission parameters to avoid interference to primary users. Additionally, we have demonstrated that when the primary user transmission changes, the cognitive radio dynamically adjusts its transmission accordingly.
