In Low and Middle income countries (LMIC) the difficult access to some diagnostic tests makes the management of the metabolic emergencies challenging. The main objectives of this study were to assess the frequency and circumstances of occurrence and to describe the clinical picture associated with glucose, sodium and potassium disorders in neonates. Patients and Methods: Our study was a retrospective and descriptive study conducted in the neonatology unit of National Children Hospital Albert Royer in Dakar (Senegal) from January 1 to December 31, 2014. Results: The prevalence of the studied metabolic disorders was 46.7%. The most common metabolic disorder noted was Hyperglycemia followed by Hyponatremia. Thermoregulation disturbances were found particularly in newborns with serum sodium disorders (hyponatremia 33.5% and hypernatremia 59.7%). Neurological signs were noted in case of blood sugar abnormalities (hypoglycemia 26.1% and hyperglycemia 29.8%). Half of the newborns with hyperglycemia (82 cases/50%) had blood sugar levels greater than or equal to 2 g/l. Hypernatremia was severe (Serum sodium> 180 mmol/l) in 12 neonates (16.7%). The most lethal disorders were Hyperkalemia followed by Hyperglycemia. Conclusion: Metabolic disorders especially glucose, sodium and potassium disorders are common in newborns. They are medical emergencies that can lead to vital instability and death. Their management is challenging in low-income countries due to the lack of adapted facilities and means to diagnose them. It is therefore important to improve the availability of technical methods and means of biological analysis in hospital laboratories and to monitor closely all newborns for early diagnosis of these disorders.","PeriodicalId":61486,"journal":{"name":"儿科学期刊(英文)","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70525337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this work was to determine the causes of cancellation of elective surgical operations in a major pediatric surgery department in Senegal. Patients and methods: It was a prospective and descriptive study of 278 patients scheduled during a period of 13 weeks. The study took place between April 3rd, 2017, and January 31st, 2018. Mean age was 2.9 years with extremes of 3 days and 15 years. The age group of 29 days to 30 months was the most represented (62.2%). Sex ratio was 1.41. Causes of cancellation were categorized into administrative and organizational causes, patient-related causes and staff-related causes. Results: Cancellation rate was 29.4%. Patient-related causes were most common (51.2%). Upper Respiratory tract infection (URTI) was commonest reason within this category (57.5%). Organizational causes (28.1%) came second and were mainly represented by the unavailability of the operating room (60.8%) related to breakdowns of anesthesia equipment. Finally, staff-related causes (20.7%) were due for most to the unavailability of the anesthesiologist (12 cases/17). Conclusion: Majority of causes that led to cancellation of elective surgical operations in our Pediatric surgery department are related to intercurrent illnesses affecting the patient, in particular URTI.","PeriodicalId":61486,"journal":{"name":"儿科学期刊(英文)","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70524371","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We report the case of EG of unusual presentation in a 12-month-old infant. Case Presentation: This was a 12-month-old male infant who was referred from a peripheral structure for the treatment of facial swelling associated with fever. In his ante-natal and intra nasal history, there was a notion of hospitalization for 15 days for early neonatal infection and a delay in psychomotor development. The admission examination showed the fair general condition, hyperthermia at 39˚C, tachycardia at 136 beats/minute, and polypnea at 48 cycles/minute. The weight-for-height index with a z-score of 3DS was also found. The dermatological examination at the entrance found an extensive brownish inflammatory tense infiltrated plaque taking the mandibular, submental, retro-auricular occipital regions rapidly evolving towards necrosis, a significant swelling predominant on the upper right eyelid preventing the opening of the associated eyes to mouth ulcera-tion. Biological abnormalities were predominantly neutrophilic leukocytosis, elevated CRP, and elevated muscle enzymes. Microbiological examination of skin samples had isolated Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He had received antibiotic therapy, and a necrosectomy under general anesthesia. The evolution was favorable and he was discharged from the hospital on D26 of hospitalization. Conclusion: This observation is rare due to its location, its early onset, and non-neutropenic background.","PeriodicalId":61486,"journal":{"name":"儿科学期刊(英文)","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70527066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
